After a cold morning with snow on the ground we’ve had a lovely sunny day. A short trip to look for any new signs of spring proved very fruitful and we saw 2 Cranes, the first Starlings and Lapwings and the Skylarks were singing. However, all of them kept their distance but I managed to get a shot of a Buzzard from a distance of about 20 metres (64 feet).

Common Buzzard – Buteo buteo
This bird of prey is found in most of Europe and parts of Asia. Here in the south of Sweden it is common. It is between 46-58 cm in length with a 110 to 132 cm wingspan, making it a medium-sized raptor. Here we often see it hunting along the main roads for rodents or carrion, but they also feed on snakes, frogs, young birds and insects. It breeds in woodland often alongside open land. The call is a plaintive peea-ay, similar to a cat's meow.

This capture was taken from the car along a minor road and from a distance of about 20 metres. It has been cropped slightly and sharpened.

Hi Ulla
He looks angry ;-) I like the POV and composition and of course the look on his "face" Background is little bit noisy. Have you try NeatImage or PS?
Best wishes
Krzysztof

We have some buteo here, but not sure which kind. I can NEVER get close enough to get a shot...they tease me by soaring higher and higher and then swoop down when I least expect. I just saw one land not more than 10 minutes ago out on my AM walk...wrong lens...see? You are lucky!

Well done for capturing such a wary bird!
Natural colours and great lighting.
Superb composition and POV.
Great DOF.
Slightly noisy but that is the only downside.
Very well done Ulla!

Hi Ulla,

I have a mental block when it comes to converting metres to feet but you must have been close! I have not seen a buzzard in real life. I love the pose and the twinkle in his eye. Nice shot from a car!

Hello Ulla
Congratulations on this lovely capture of a Buzzard (I dont like to use the word common for such a magnificent bird)..You were very fortunate to come across him on your drive...I have spent countless spare hours following them in my local area where they are still quite uncommon..I know of 5 seperate birds but have never come close to a capture such as this.
Great work Ulla and Thanks for sharing superb capture.

Hi Ulla. I go past a Buzzard who sits on a pole on my way to work . I shall have to stop and try to get a picture . so some sun at last for you. .
You have shown we dont need big SLRs and Lenes to get a good picture . you have done so well with your camera and the converter. good detail and natural colours. with a glint in the eye. well done TFS.
Nick..

Hej Ulla,
a well composed picture of this beautiful buzzard.
I like the pose and POV too.
It's a bit soft but thats' from the converter, everthing
you set infront of the lesn will decrease sharpness, try to use a small aperture as possible.
Well done, mf.

Hi Ulla,

Good capture and beautiful colors. only a little noise but i don't mind about that.

Great picture, Ulla, with beautiful light and a charming bird as a subject! The pose of this bird is a little unusual, it looks relax and natural. The composition with those branches crossing at the background is superb. Thank you!

Francine

Hello Ulla,
Fine details in the plumage, well done on colour reproduction!
The majestic bird gives a good pose, attentive and always on the lookout for food or threats...
A fine composition!

Hello Ulla,

Very nice picture of this buzzard. Good composition, good focus. Great light and colours. I saw one one month ago, no too far from where I live but he was to high in the tree and however with my camera it is not possible to have decent picture of birds.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hi Ulla

I don't remember seeing too many photos from you with an S2 and a TC...but i see you producing some very nice results.
Very good close-up on this buzzard here, shown with great details and colors considering the equipment; in fact, this is better again that what i've been able to produce with my new toys :)
Very nice lighting and exposure control, as well.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Ulla, very fine capture of this Buzzard. Frontal lighting is good providing excellent colour and detail on the bird. He's picked a great spot to stop and rest to give you a clear shot, and I like how he's turned his head, to give you a reflection off that eye.

Thanks,John

Hi Ulla,
to me, part of photography is being in the right place at the right time - sometimes this is through sheer luck, sometimes through proper planning!
You obviously went out to the right spot at the right time in search of something with the right equipment - but it was perhaps luck that this beautiful bird should cross your path at the right time! You certainly made the most of this opportunity here! I love the pose and the setting as well as his markings - a well seen shot!

Hi Ulla,
nice job in capturing this wonderful bird. Very well timed to get a look at the profile of the bird.
POV, sharpness and details are great.

Hello Ulla a fine portrait could be a little sharper at the head but I appretiate how tough it must have been with the DOF so shallow and use of converter. Well composed good closeup tfs rgds Necip.

Hello Ulla,

A buzzard is a bird that I have never seen in the wild!
It must have been a thrill to see him so relatively close.
You have composed the shot well and the inclusion of the branches gives us some indication of the height!
I do like the details of his beak and large talons - the speak clearly of his method of feeding!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
