It’s more than a year ago since I posted a flying Mallard, maybe I have live up to my nick name here on TN I got the first year I was a member, “the Duckman”;-)) since I post a lot of flying ducks.
This was taken down by our small river Gavleån. In the winter we have 300 pair who are wintering here. Normally in the summer it is maybe 5-10 pair.
It was a test to shot in-flights with my new canon Id MII and it was quite easy when the autofocus points were set to so call “ring of fire”. Just aim and shot.
The exposure was set to manual as usual for in-flight shot.
I hope you like the mallard.

PLS
No points for this, I have given them up like some others. I have turn of the points, so don’t waste your green ones

We all know almost everything about Mallards but here is some info.

The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), also known in North America as the Wild Duck, is a common and widespread dabbling duck which breeds throughout the temperate and sub-tropical areas of North America, Europe and Asia. It also frequents Central America and the Caribbean. It is probably the best-known of all ducks.
This dabbling duck is 56-65 cm length, with a 81–98 cm wingspan, and weighs 750–1000 g. It is strongly migratory in the northern parts of its breeding range, and winters farther south. It is highly gregarious outside of the breeding season and will form large flocks. They are exceptionally fast flyers for their size, reaching speeds of 40mph. Due to their streamlining however, it hardly ruffles a feather.
The breeding male is unmistakable, with a green head, black rear end and a blue speculum edged with white, obvious in flight or at rest. Males also possess a yellow bill with a black tip, whereas females have a dark brown bill.
The females are light brown, with plumage much like most female dabbling ducks. They can be distinguished from other ducks, by the distinctive speculum. In non-breeding (eclipse) plumage, the drake looks more like the female.
It is a bird of most wetlands, including parks, small ponds and rivers, and usually feeds by dabbling for plant food or grazing. It nests usually on a river bank, but not always particularly near water.
This is a noisy species. The male has a nasal call, whereas the female has the very familiar "quack" always associated with ducks.
Mallards frequently interbreed with the American Black Duck, Northern Pintail and domesticated species, leading to various hybrids. A Mallard has been recorded as living for 29 years.

Hej Gert,
Superb in-flight of a female Mallard, something I have yet to achieve. I like th wing position, lighting and composition against an OOF natural BG.
I tried some photography from my hide at our local nature reserve today and got a water Pipit and Ringed Plover, but they were too far away to make postable shots. At leat the wind had dropped!
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Hälsningar,
Ivan

Hi Gert.
Many thanks for comments and estimation of my technique experiments.
Thanks a lot for masteries which is amazing sample for imitation. It is your firm style, subject and expression of great skill. I remember your other amazing in-flight bird pictures. This one is so outstanding as those shots. Simply terrific crisp sharpness and vibrant clean colours. BG is so fantastic as the main subject. Bravo, dear friend. You open for us new horizons. My congratulations.
Alexei.

It is so beautiful, what colours and what details, Gert, awesome picture. I love the saturated vivid colours, all shining in the beautiful light. The details are amazing but what impresses me most is the grace of the movement, the moment you captured is so elegant and graceful, filling the frame. Thank you,

Francine

Hi Gert

Even though i've been here for quite a while now, i still didn't know the days when you were "the Duckman"...but i did hear "myths" about those days...
Days when people would write critiques because they actually believed they could help, days when people were probably more friendly, days when there were fewer members just looking for points and people that would note read the TOS at all...are we so different now?

Actually...never mind that...i'm only happy that old backbone members like you (and few others) are still here and we can still enjoy their wonderful company and vast experience.
I've had a look at your older photos and saw some other very beautiful mallard in-flights...and this one goes wonderfully next to them! It's a superb addition to an already incredible portfolio!
I love the impeccable sharpness and the gorgeous and well saturated colors.
The image is very well frozen but still retains just a bit of movement right at the tips of the wings...perfectly taken!

BRAVO and TFS
Horia

hehe, the duckman returns! :-) awesome inflight-shot, again, perfect, just like i am dreaming to take someday, my inspiration
somehow, just that there are not too many flying ducks around here and the weather was very bad....
perfect sharpness on the body, a slight motion blur on the wingtips and an amazing sunlight the really brings out the
colors and the feather structure.
incredible job & best wishes, thor.

Beautiful inflight Gert..I remember 4 years ago when I viewed some of your inflight quackers for the first time..I was very impressed.
Still am :)
Excellent colors, details, DOF, POV, exposure, and a lovely BG too.
Very well composed, Very well done.
