Tree Sparrow – Passer montanus

These little birds looked so cosy as they gathered in our Privet hedge after a good meal the other day. It was warm and sunny and I captured them from a distance of about 6 metres with the camera handheld. The image has been cropped and sharpened. NeatImage on the background – not that successful, but I still rather liked these two as they enjoyed the sunshine.

The Tree Sparrow is slightly smaller than the House Sparrow. It’s recognised by the chocolate brown cap, the white cheek with the black spot and the greyish/white ring around the neck.

In Sweden it is common in gardens, parks and built-up areas. It feeds on insects and seeds. It’s got a pleasant chattering but it is a rather monotonous sound.

It nests in hollow trees, under roof-tiles and sometimes in nest boxes. Male and female stay together and build a nest using straw, grass and feathers.

Tree Sparrows are common in most of Europe and Asia.

Hello Ulla,
I like your sparrows, great light and very alive and beautiful colours those grey birds.
Regards, Pawel

Amazing...what a nice capture of the two looking so posed. Clearly shot in full light with all colours showing so nicely. And the greenery is plentiful yet does not dominate or bother..It looks as a storybook image...from a childs guide to nature....something even a young one might enjoy!

Hello Ulla,

What a great catch! Two for the price of one!
They both have excellent eye contact and detailed images. The feather pattens are nicely displayed and the colours natural. They look to be listening intently to something!

I was watching what I thought was a sparrow yesterday.
As it came closer, I realised that its feather patterns were wrong for that bird. It was in fact a dunnock. I got a couple of shots, reasonable but perhaps not just sharp enough to post!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Gråvädret bara fortsätter med regn och blötsnö.

Very well seen and captured scene, Ulla. The Tree Sparrows seem to be enjoying the sunshine. The catch-light in their eyes looks very attractive.
I like the maze of little branches they are perched on.
