Wood Pigeon – Columba palumbus

The Woodpigeon is the largest of pigeons in Sweden (38-43 cm). It is easily recognisable by the white patch on the neck and in flight the white bands on the wings are clearly visible. They’re mainly found in woodlands but also in parks and gardens. Their cooing call is a familiar sound in woodlands here and often you here the loud clatter of wings as they fly off. They feed mainly on buds, shoots, seeds and berries, but also on worms and snails. The female builds a rather untidy nest from dry twigs and branches that the male brings to her. At the moment they both come together to feed and drink in our garden every day.

It is common in most parts of Sweden but migrates south during September-October to return in March-April. Some stay down here in the south.

This was captured from a distance of about 5 metres (16,40 feet) with the camera handheld. It is a bit dark as it was overcast at the time. The image has been sharpened and reduced in size for TN.

Hi Ulla,

A beautiful picture of this pigeon posing so nicely. Although doves and pigeons are so common they really have a beauty of their own. I just love the neck feathers, face, beak and eye. Wonderful natural colors and excellent details. It's so nice to see him on the green instead of the rocks we have here.

Hello Ulla,

A wood pigeon nested in our tree a coupls of years ago, before I had a camera or was interested in photography, so I have no record of it!

This is excellent! It is very sharp for hand held and the details of its feathers and features are very good. I never realised before what a pinky tinge it has to its breast feathers; it matches its dark pink legs!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hola Sra. Ulla.
Fina foto de esta especie de paloma. Muy parecidas las hay en mi pais. son muy sociables y en ocaciones las poblaciones crecen tanto que se convierten en un problema.
Muy bellos colores sobre todo en el cuello.
Saludos

We have plenty of pigeons down here - and many wild feral ones too that live along the cliffs - and in the cities! But each one has its own beauty.
She looks so calm and placid - pretty colours too,
TFS

We don't have that species of pigeon either, ours are all kind of colours, they're the "common" pigeons. This one is nice and looks more like a grey dove to me and the way you describe it. Thanks, Ulla, for the notes and for the nice picture once more!

Francine

What a nice "textbook" capture of a "Tahtalı", as we say in Turkish Ulla, in spite of the weak lighting you've managed to get a high degree of plumage & coloration detail in a well-focused take. TFS and cheers,
Mehmet

Lovely.

This one brigs fond memories from the summers we spent in Lund in the 90s.

TFS!

Hallo Ulla
What a beautiful stout bird, and very pleasing to the eye. Trek Nature is such a wonderful site giving us the opportunity to see more than one expected or knew existed. When I was a child I thought a dove is a dove is a dove. Later on Loot pointed out different ones, especially when we visit the Kruger and even now I learn of more species. Doves and pigeons always look so clean and pure and this one of yours is no exception. The white patch of feathers is very eye-catching and emphasise the dull coloured grey splendidly. I like the way you have captured this one from the side, giving us an idea how big it is. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

It is a cute pigeon and you have captured it well in profile view, Ulla.
Though Pigeons are a very common sight, I can't help adoring their very peculiar eyes.
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Hi Ulla.
You managed to represent this beautiful pigeon excellently. Amazing details and sharpness of the image despite the use of 2x converter. You have reflected every feather and other nice features of the bird. Grass ground is wonderful addition for main character. It seems to be it would be better to increase the brightness of the image. Well done and kind regards.
Alexei.
