Hooded Crow – Corvus corone cornix

The weather here is very changeable at the moment and this morning snow is falling quite heavily but as the ground is warm we hope it won’t stay! No chance of photography so I’ve dug out a picture of a Crow captured recently down along the coast.

The Crows in our woods are now actively building their nests in the tall pine trees. They often reuse an old nest which they repair with new twigs. On top of these they add grass, roots, hairs and other soft material. The female will lays 3-6 green/grey spotted eggs. Once the young ones arrive both parents share the task of feeding them. The Crow has a varied diet consisting of vegetable matter, fruit, insects, snails, eggs, small birds and mammals.

Crows are very sociable and intelligent. Their eye sight, hearing and sense of smell are all very sharp. While actively looking for food in the mornings they have a rest at midday after which they’re about again and their noisy call can often be heard while chasing cats or squirrels or if there’s a danger near, such as a bird of prey.

This was taken from a distance of about 12 metres with the camera handheld. It has been sharpened and reduced in size for TN. NeatImage on background.

Hi Ulla,
Wonderful shot of this Hooded Crow with amazing sharpness on its plumage. Superb lighting and exposure and I like the glint on its eye and the rotal pose you have captured it in with a neat DOF and a fine POV. The blue sky acts as a nice BG and the branch looks so interesting. Very nicely composed too. Kudos.
TFS.

This is a particularly hard bird to capture. I can tell by it's colours. If I had to do that image I am sure my settings would have been very much off and perhaps not correctable...you did a wonderful job with it...I can see some PP which is delicately done in order to bring out the important parts so well..
Bob

Nice setting, good colours!

The blue BG is simple and effective.

Hello Ulla,

Be happy. The spring is in the air. Take for instance a look to the branches. I see some blossom. A very nice composition. Razorsharp and ful of fine details. Natural colors. Beautiful blue sky, so the BG must be perfect (-: Pov and DOF are oké. Greetings and TFS BOB

Hi Ulla,

I like this Crow better than the usual all black ones. Wonderful pose and colors. Nice details of the face and plummage.

Speaking of weather - lots of flowers are blooming and yesterday it snowed for the entire afternoon. The weather reports called it "unknown precipitation." I guess they can't admit it when it snows in Tucson.

Jane

An excellent shot with great DOF and colours. A beautiful picture.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Ulla, elegant crow in great pose, wonderful details and excellent sharpness, perfect focus and beautiful contrast against blue sky, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hej Ulla,
Seems like you have a visit from a cousin of my good friends!
I have a couple of crows fighting with magpies for the dry bread I feed them, but the magpies are bolder and probably smarter so they win most of the time...
This guy gives a fine pose, good colours & details in the plumage!
Greetings,
Pablo -
