[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Yesterday's snow showers gave way to a small ridge of high pressure and a clear sky with a ground temperature down to minus 10 Celcius and as this morning was sunny we took a short trip in the car see if the birds made use of the sunshine.

Indeed there were flocks of Fieldfares, Redwings, Lapwings and a large flock of Linnets had come from the south. These species use their own wing muscles to give them power to migrate.

But larger birds like the Common Crane (Grus grus) have learnt to use air currents to travel long distances as it takes a lot of energy for larger birds to flap their wings during a long period of time.

The Wandering Albatross, for example, can use the air currents generated by ocean waves for hours and travel quite fast close to the sea surface just by having their wings stretched out.

Cranes can use the wind to occasionally flap the wings and glide along with the wind if it happens to be blowing in the right direction. If the wind is unfavourable they rest in certain places to feed along the migration route.

If there is little or no wind and it is sunny they use thermals. Thermals are currents of air that rise vertically from the ground that is being warmed up by the sun. They can occur even in sub-zero temperatures. The cranes circle while being driven up by the thermal and when they reach a certain height where the thermal disperses they glide down in their desired direction to find the next thermal. This proceedure requires relatively little energy.

Thermals are also used by the larger birds of prey during migration or when looking for carion.

This was taken with the camera hand-held and was selectively sharpened after size reduction. I could have used a lower ISO but was also prepared for small bird photography.

Hi Ivan,
Perfect shot of these colony in flying friend. TFS. Regards,
Bayram

I recognized what you meant by the title...having been around so many ultra light crafts and folks who soar down hills without motors...Super nice Ivan. You sound a bit like me in search of the sun or sunny day...Jane and I do the same...Have a good Easter...I am off to Mass...

Hi Ivan,

Excellent shot of these four flying in formation. Amazing how much detail you managed - the wings are magnificent. You took good advantage of a sunny morning. I found your notes extremeley interesting.

Hi Ivan,

Ivan,

Nice inflight, and the note, 4 In one shot is difficult to do. I see a similar bit of noise around the birds and have to same difficulty. Can anyone explane this?

Well done,

Scott

Hello Ivan
This is just amazing to get this group stacked as you have.
All have their primaries clawing for any signs of rising heat...The iso isnt a problem at all..It is so difficult to set for every situation unless you have a neck full of cameras!!
All the best
Paul

Hi İvan
this is a great image
very good sharp and composition
well done.

merhaba dear friend Ivan,
sorry I couldnt visit your last posts. As you know, I was in field.
Today, I observed shortly big migration of the bird in either along roads and Belen Pass near Hatay prov in Southern Turkiye.
As you know, this is one of the most important routes for migratory birds. By the way, they can find useful thermal and migrate from Europe and Turkiye to Africa and come back in same route.
In last week, I also saw first crane of this year (for me) in our campus (Akkaya Dam Lake).
Your post excellent. Title, notes, focus, blue BG and composition wonderful. POV and timing also great. Thanks for sharing
best wishes my friend
Ahmet

Very good shot of these migrating Cranes!
These birds look very impressive in flight.
Great detail in the feathers and superb sharpness.
Brilliant composition too.
Informative note.
Did you use the 300mm f/4 and 1.4x converter?

Cheers Ivan,
Joe

Hi Ivan,

Great capture of the four Cranes flying. Good details and composition. So they have already arrived in Sweden. It always makes you wonder what is the hurry to come early when they still have difficulties to find food. Good work.

Thanks for sharing

Hi Ivan,
Wonderful shot of these four buddies gliding across. Very neat and sharp image with superb lighting and colours. The blue sky makes the image look majestic. Nice illustration of their flying patterns and use of optimum wind energy. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.
TFS.

One, two, three, four splendid flying birds with perfect focus and great details, thanks Ivan for this wonderful composition, I like a lot, ciao Silvio

I envy all the guys and gals on TN who manage to take pictures of flying birds, Ivan. Whenever I have tried to do it, I have ended with blank frames; the birds seem to be too fast for an old man's reflexes -- that's how I console myself.
This is a wonderful capture with four of them together and not even one out of focus. Good reflexes there!
The blue sky provides a great background here.

Minus 10 is terrible weather at this time of the year; hope the sunshine stays with you from now on.
Regards.
Ram

Ivan, Lovely title and great clarity. View is superb and sharpness. Ganesh

A rare occurrence to behold in such a limited part of the sky Ivan, you captured these soaring birds with stationary wings expertly, as usual, my friend, there is no movement, but still, a strong dynamism is evident in this composition. Thanks for sharing this interesting scene with us my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Ivan. The flight is wonderful to see. Brilliant formation against the spotless blue sky. Lovely long necks in full spread of the wings. I like it and very well captured. Regards. Jusni

Hi Ivan,
Wonderful composition here of these sharply focused Cranes. Good detail considering the distance. Super dark blue sky. Interesting note.
Well done, Tfs Richard
