Northern Lapwing – Vanellus vanellus

Even though we’ve had cold winter weather for a few days, springtime is very intense here in Scandinavia. As soon as the sun appears its nice and warm. More and more birds are arriving every day from their winter quarters down south and spring flowers are beginning to pop up everywhere. The first Lapwings are now back in the fields and wetlands. I captured this one from the car at a distance of 20 metres (65 feet). There were to of them constantly on the move between the water and the dry grass so they were hard to catch. This is not perfect but it’s the best capture I’ve got of a Lapwing so far.

“The Northern Lapwing, also known as the Peewit, Green Plover or just Lapwing, is a bird in the plover family. It is common through temperate Europe, and across temperate Asia. It occasionally is a vagrant to North America. It is highly migratory over most of its extensive range, wintering further south as far as north Africa, northern India and China. It migrates mainly by day, often in large flocks.

The Northern Lapwing is a 28-31cm long bird with a 67-72cm wingspan, It has rounded wings and a crest. It is the shortest-legged of the lapwings. It is mainly black and white, but the back is tinted green.

The numbers of this species have been adversely affected by intensive agricultural techniques.” Extract from Wikipedia

Hi Ulla,

Very good capture with good details and colours. So the spring is arriving to Scandinavia. Lapwing is one of the best signs for that.

Thanks for sharing

Hello Ulla, I am charmed by the beautiful colours of this bird, the nice dried grasses and the blue water that's bluer than blue. I envy your spring that's earlier than ours and you are right, springs at higher latitude is such an intense experience! Thank you very much, it's a treat for the eyes to see this picture,

Francine

Hi Ulla,
nice seeing that Spring is arriving on your end. Not here thought ... still snowing, just as I look out of the window.
Very nice shot of this lapwing, the light caught it very well and highlighted all those fabulous colors in the plumage.
Nice composition with the bird on the waters edge in a lovely natural environment.
TFS..Sky

Hello Ulla,

The sun is shining over the feathers. A beautiful glow (colors like the rainbow) we will see. Yes the spring is in the air and the N Lapwing is back from South Africa or maybe Holland (-: The first one saw I about a month ago in the Vlietlanden, nearby Vlaardingen in the SW part of the Netherlands. But your country is higher up, so you have must to wait till now. It is a beautiful photo of the Northern Lapwing. Not your best one, but that doesn't matter. I like him very much. The enviroment, including this bird, makes your compo complete. Thansk for that. Have a nice weekend and TFS BOB

Hi Ulla,

This Lapwing is a very interesting looking bird. Wonderful to see it in its natural setting. His plummage has such nice colors and his face and crest are fascinating. Beautiful job as always.

Jane

Hi Ulla very nice to see Lapwing so early in Sweden.Great colours and fine details. TFS

And in the plover family of birds too??!! It is one which would have fooled me...and the unusual shark skin glean in the small area of the wing adds an interesting touch to a new species or part of family. Very nicely done Ulla!

Hi Ulla,
What a fine specimen of a "girlie bird" (in Turkish, Kız Kuşu) perfectly captured in all its finery among a natural reedy habitat. The low POV nicely includes the waters of the wetland as a contrasty BG. Have a nice weekend my friend.
Mehmet

Hi Ulla

A lovely kiewiet with its crown of feathers. I love those stunning luminous or brilliantly gleaming colours this bird has on its back and wing feathers.

You show this bird in its typical habitat and you have captured good details and show excellent contrasts between the darker and brighter areas on the plumage. The composition is fine and the overall lighting of the shot was well controlled.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Wow!!!!! This is another one of those birds, like the Starling, which amazes you with its colours when it gets close.
The iridescent sheen mixed with a touch of purple and yellow is very beautiful!
Very good composition and POV.
Pretty sharp with great clarity.
A really superb shot Ulla and thanks for sharing this seeing as we don't often see such a pretty bird up close.
Regards,
Joe

The teleconverter does help in getting a good picture from sizable distance with your simple camera, Ulla.
I find the colours on this bird quite attractive.
The picture has very natural settings.
It is good to know that spring has arrived your region.
It is now very hot in India during the day.
Thanks and regards,
Ram

The details are also wonderful and sharp. Very beautiful composition, as well, nice framing.
