Small Tortoiseshell - Aglais urticae

Mild and sunny today and these two butterflies have been chasing each other round the garden. A lovely sight to see the first butterflies appear! There are quite a few flowers out now but they preferred to settle on the soil or on the stone to warm themselves.

These two have probably been hibernating in an outhouse, loft or cellar somewhere. It is the most abundant nymphalid species in Europe with a wingspan of 40 – 52 mm and can be found where there are lots of flowers, along woodland tracks, in meadows, gardens and parks. It is common in the whole of Europe and Asia and here in the north it often occurs in large numbers and it can be found at almost any altitudes.

There are two or three generations a year, and the caterpillars can be found on nettles which they often strip of all their leaves.

This was taken from a distance of ½ metre with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,

Great close up work, DOF is excellent, both butterfly are very well in focus.
A lovely light highlights their wings and the details are perfectly sharp.

Hi Ulla!

You have your spring messengers, we still have snow. They are beautiful, and the fact that there are two adds to the value of the picture. It changes from the usual single butterflies. The fact that they aren't on a flower but on stones makes this picture definitely an outstanding one.

Kind regards

Markus

Ulla,
What a beautiful shot! And an amazing composition, overall!
Thank you!
Cheers!

A very nice offset perch, the rock makes. And of course th signature "duo" of focal points...by the way i was telling Silvio that we miss Pankaj and Sumon...although your images tend to differ quite dramatically, theirs add the whole concept when put together with all... A very nice spring posting Ulla.!

Merhaba Ulla,
I'm glad you are beginning to experience spring up there my friend, This is a pictorially perfect double-take from a good, slightly side-tracked POV and with enough DOF zone to capture both of the b.flies and the stone they perched on sharply in focus with great detail. A fine tableau indeed!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Ulla, very nice shot of these two butterflies together. The colour on these guys is great. I really like the background they found. They must be collecting some heat from those stones. The shot is very nicely composed with the two facing to the top right like this. The wide open pose of the two together gives very good visibility of all of their features. Nicely done.

Thanks, John

ohoh, I'll be back

Congratulations on the official arrival of spring! (in my mind it's always when I see those butterflies flitting around that I feel sure spring is here).
A beautiful shot - such amazing color! Well done!!

Hello Ulla!
This time a rather short comment :)
very nice photo of butterflies! My best congratulations because of the first in this year! :)
For me especially composition is interesting and the poses of insects - it is really interesting why the distance between them is so small.
Best greetings from Lodz and see you after 20 April! :)
Radomir

Nice capture of the pair, sharp image with good details. Very nice shot. Well captured.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Ulla
Fantastic early spring shot. I have seen Gonepteryx rhamni yesterday. Unfortunately I have no time for photographic excursions ;-(
Very nice compo I like square crop. Great moment and nice natural colors. Sharpness is good but I think that you could use little unsharp mask on wings here
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Please tell me which power helped you to click such a great shot.

Hi Ulla

Sorry to have missed so many beautiful captures from you, my friend, but spare time came in very short amounts lately for me. However, i'm happy i found a bit of extra time this nice Sunday afternoon and it gave me a great pleasure to browse through your gallery again :)

I'm sure finding and shooting the first butterflies of the year made you happy so i chose this one to tell you that i understand your joy about this subject :)

This is a lovely capture of these two Small Tortoiseshells in this great spring light. The colors are gorgeous and the close-up on them gave you some very nice and sharp details for their wings and antennae.
Well exposed and composed.

Bravo, TFS and best regards to you and Ivan, too! Take care my friends!
Horia
