[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today in S. Sweden March went out like a lamb to give us a day of real spring weather with warmth in the sunshine.

The Eurasian Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) has already arrived from the south and has gained its irridescent breeding plumage with a black-tipped yellow beak.

In the late summer they gather in large flocks and moult to the spotty plumage of winter and the bill becomes black. Those in Sweden migrate to more southerly parts of Europe, many to the UK.

This species has been introduced into N. America, where it has spread across to cCalifornia and it has also been introduced into Australia and New Zealand. With the help of man it has become one of the most widespread birds in the world. The Scientific name means Common Starling, though Linnaeus named it before it had become so widespread.

This individual is keeping guard over a nest box on an elm that has died of Dutch Elm desease and he sat on a branch not too high up to take this shot. However as he was over twelve meters away I had to heavily crop this image.

This was taken with the camera hand-held and after the heavy cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened.

This is great capture of shany plumaged Starling. I saw some clusters today, but I couldnt get closer on the contrary yours. Nicely composed from nice POV. sharp details very nice. good notes. thanks for sharing. best wishes my friend

Hello Ivan
I spent many a happy winters afternoon watching the Starlings, Fieldfares and the occasional Redwing grazing in the Fields around where I live. They truly were a sight.
Your post is superb as your note explains so well a year in thier life and with a crystal clear super picture of this starling in the breeding plumage which I rarely see as the Starling is on the decline and scarce where I live.
A top picture and a top post and Thank you for Sharing this one.
All the Best
Paul

I have not heard the term Dutch Elm Disease in many years. As a teenager it became a very big notion in the E US...and killed many a tree. How ironic this bird is nested in one....and a good control of black, a hard colour or not colour to get imaged well without throwing all other things off...Nicely done and some nice thoughtful notes..

Hi Ivan,

I think Starlings have the most beautiful plummage and you show it off perfectly. Wonderful colors with excellent irridescence. Razor sharp details of the face, eye, wings and plummage.

Hi Ivan

Lovely shot of the Starling, its a nice composition with a lovely pose and a fine POV, very good detail and the colours are lovely especially the irridescent colours on the feathers, nice light in the eye too, I always think getting the starlings eye to show up is hard so well done.

Uno degli uccelli pił visto in Europa in una bellissima immagine, buona composizione (personalmente avrei tagliato una piccola parte sotto per diminuire la zona sfocata), ottimi dettagli e molto belli i colori. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello My dear friend Ivan,
Superb shot of this beautifully colour-patterned starling with splendid details. Excellent and usefull note on its anthropogenic spreading. TFS.
Cheers,
Bayram

Hello Ivan. Interesting note of this starling and we still don't have it here in Malaysia, I think. The capture is excellent and the depth was kept very shallow just exposing the bird to perfection. I like the pattern on the plumage which is striking like black and gold. Good perch against the clear spotless background. Well done Ivan and thanks for sharing this. Best regards, Jusni.

Wow! What a glossy Starling!
Very sharp image of this fellow.
Nice colours too.
Excellent BG and light.
Great work Ivan!
Right I'm off to take some photos!

Cheers,
Joe

Hi Ivan, this is probably one bird that N. America, Australia and New Zealand could have gladly done without. All that being said though it can be a good looking bird, as you've shown here. This is well composed with a great pose by the bird. The colours are "true" with good sharp detail seen on the bird. A great shot, and very good job of PP.

Thanks, John

Hi Ivan.
Superb POV and classic composition of the image. Fine bird is reproduced by you perfect with excellent exposure and plenty attractive details. I like the reproduction of the double "ground", blurred and crisp sharp. It is so interesting solution. Lights and colours are excellent.
