European Goldfinch – Carduelis carduelis

I’ve got a touch of the flu or something and am not feeling too well today. But as I looked out of my window just now I saw this rare visitor to our garden and it made me feel a lot better!!

We’ve seen a flock of these nearby on a few occasions but this time there was just this one that came to the feeder on the Lilac outside my window. It was very obliging and sat still for quite a while for me to get the camera and take a few shots.

The Goldfinch is often found in neglected farmland and open areas with few trees where it has access to weed seeds and insects. They build their nests in the upper branches of small trees or tall bushes. The Swedish name for this bird is ‘Steglits’ which comes from their repetitive call.

This was taken through a triple-glazed window from a distance of about 5 metres (16 feet) with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla
Very nice shot of this European Goldfinch,
Perfect details,colors and composition.
Welldone my friend.

Regards
Fartash

I sincerely hope you are feeling better by now Ulla, as I said before, you have very clean windows my friend, this is a fine capture of a beautiful Goldfinch specimen from a good, lateral POV, showing the characteristic coloration of the bird to a perfection. TFS indeed!
Mehmet

I can only hope that we have some as beautiful as this example Ulla. It is a super coloured bird. The Creator had some special moments. Triple glazed window? Is it old as well? You know glass is actually a liquid?:-) A long story but quite true....so the older it is then one can see certain fluid properties towards the bottoms...very nice image Ulla. Much appreciated this fine sunny day here in the Western US.
Bob

Hello Ulla,

Hi Ulla,
This looks much similar to the Javafinch which is being reared here as a bird of cage. Nice composition and very good details. An excellent capture. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ulla,

Great shot of the Goldfinch, nice pose and POV, with great well saturated colours, I spotted my first one two weeks ago but didnt manage to get a shot but I was still quite excited to see one, in the UK they are doing well with the milder winters and they have now become the 10th most common in our gardens so one day I might get one too, hope you feel better soon.

Hil

Hope you are better today, Ulla!

Lovely shot!

European Goldfinches are seen quite often in Israel. Unfortunately they have become endangered because of illegal trapping, to be sold as pets, because of their beautiful song.

As for the name, I believe the‘Steglits’ in Swedish comes form 'Stieglitz' in German.

Get well soon!

Ishi

Hi Ulla, I've seen birds that look like this in pet stores, and always assumed they were a tropical bird. We have the American Goldfinches in Canada, but they don't have this red on them. This guy is awesome. With all your difficulties you still got a good specimen here with great colour and decent detail in a very good pose. Nicely done.

Thanks, John

Hi Ulla, splendid bird with fantastic colors, superb details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Ulla, you have a great result for a picture through-the-window! How I wish we could see those beautiful birds here, but I am glad to discover them on TN. I love the lilac branches as the decor for this lovely picture of yours, with natural colours yet flaming on this bird. Thank you!

Francine

Hello Ulla,

You are a true hero, still determined to capture a rare bird even though suffering from flu! You are like my father: " Get your priorities right!"

This is a beautiful bird and you have captured his details and colours well.

We used to get a lot of gold finches when we bought our house at first because there were a lot of weeds casting seeds. Since it has been more cultivated, we have seen them less and less!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

p.s. Hope you are soon feeling better.

I never saw such a good picture of European Goldfinch and get well soon for us to present some more such beautiful shots.

bonjour ulla
je pense que le convertisseur vous fait perdre un peu de piqué mais cela reste acceptable,d'autant que l'oiseau est parfaitement eclairé.
laurent

What a gorgeous bird! Lovely shot - wonderfully composed. Just perfectly done! (as usual!)

Immaculate capture of this pretty and colourful bird, Ulla.
The maze of braches in the background does not distract. It makes the capture more authentic, on the contrary.
TFS and best regards.
