Jackdaw – Corvus monedula

The European Jackdaw, is one of the smallest species (34–39 cm in length) in the genus of crows and ravens.

The iris of adults is greyish white or silvery white, the only member of the genus outside of the Australasian region to have this feature. The iris of juvenile jackdaws is light blue.

The bird is sociable, moving around in pairs (male and female) or in larger groups, though the pairs of birds stay together within the flocks. The jackdaw mostly takes food from the ground but does take some food in trees. It eats insects and other invertebrates, weed seeds and grain, scraps of human food in towns, stranded fish on the shore, and will more readily take food from bird tables than other Corvus species.

Jackdaws usually nest in colonies in cavities of trees, cliffs or ruined and sometimes inhabited buildings, usually in chimneys, and even in dense conifers. Eggs, normally 4-5, are incubated for 17-18 days and fledge after 30-35 days.

Jackdaws are found over a large area stretching from North West Africa through virtually all of Europe, Iran, north-west India and Siberia, where they inhabit wooded steppes, woodland, cultivated land, pasture, coastal cliffs and villages and towns. (Extract from Wikipedia)

I think perhaps old westerners....as in cowboy and Indian days, used names such as this as nicknames. Perhaps it was something left over from the 2 generation ancestors...and a very nice title for something which I only thought was in a movie script. Each day I am surprised by things which you take in all of the time in your neck of the woods. Fine lesson today Ulla!

A fine catch indeed Ulla, quite sharp in spite of the long distance, and the exposure was just right for the high definition of the dark feathers. That warm eye contact from such a distance is nice too.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Ulla,
Quite common here, the Jackdaw. Think it was less common when I was young. You captured this smart bird very well; excellent depth of field for example.

Hi Ulla.
I do not image the best shot of the bird. You managed to reflected all tiny colour shades and details simply amazingly despite the difficult for correct exposure object. Your camera with teleconverter in your hands create a wonders. Bravo, Ulla, great photographer.
