This is a Brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) taken in our garden in hazy sunshine.

I was surprised to discover that this is the first time that I have posted this common butterfly.

Males are a distinct light yellow with a tinge of lime green on the underside. Females are paler and less yellow and can be confused with a cabbage white at a distance.

Brimstones hibernate by hanging on low vegettion during the winter. I have never seen a hibernating individual and they are surprisingly well hidden and camouflaged.

They are one of the most long-lived butterflies and an adult and can live as long as 11 months from late summer to early summer the following year. This includes the hibernating time in the winter of course. Among the larval host plants are Buckthorn, which accounts for the species name 'rhamni'.

This image was taken at a distance of about 2 meters with the camera hand-held and after light cropping and size reduction it was selectively sharpened.

I am happy to be your neighbor today Ivan. I was thinking of you as I wrote last night. How serendipitous it is that we are side by side.

This is another of your fine examples in photography and knowledge of natural beings. Your presentations are for the most part a total lesson plan, including text. The image here is well seen and I thank you or the ones that be above, thqat you are here!

Hi Ivan,
The exposure and color here could not be better.
Excellent detail/clarity and I really like the composition/POV also.
I'm starting to see a few b-flies now, but the flowers need a bit more time..
Well done!
Howard

Hola Ivan, atractiva composición con buen contraste de colores, nitidez y buena luz. Un saludo

merhaba Ivan
this is great macro shot for not only Gonepteryx rhamni, but also great for purple flowers, I think it belongs to the genus Primula. Splendid coloration, POV and composition great as like sharpness and details. Also lighting very nice. Thanks for sharing, best wishes my friend
Ahmet

Excellent colours and a b.fly captured in fine focus and exposure from a nice viewpoint Ivan, the fine details of the underwings and that feeding proboscis getting lost probably in one of the nectariums, all make this a beautiful composition in nature. A fine way indeed to share your love of nature with your friends in TN!

Hello Ivan,

Great picture of this butterfly. Wonderful composition. Great POV and sharpness. Splendid colours. You are lucky to have butterflies yet in your garden. Sweden is warmer than the Netherlands?

Hi Ivan,

Superb shot of the pretty Brimstone.
Nicely composed shot with a great POV and a lovely pose of the Butterfly feeding with its proboscis and isn't it nice when they rest on a pretty flower rather than an old bucket or some such thing.
Really nice details, excellent colours and light.

Hil

Bonsoir Ivan
Très belle prise de ce papillon appelé : "Citron", en France.

Wow! What a fine macro of this Brimstone!
I think this is one of the most beautiful butterflies and you show this fellow at its best!
Very nice colours and great contrast between yellow and purple.
Good sharpness and detail.
If you'd got more parallel to the wings then it would have offered a better POV but it also may have made the butterfly startle and fly off!
Great DOF and focusing.
Top work Ivan!!

TFS!!!

Joe

Hello Ivan,

Very excellent macro of this butterfly Ivan. He may be common to you, but it's my first exposure to him, so thanks for the introduction. The colour and detail you've pulled out in this shot is incredible. I like how you can see the fine structure of those wings, and you caught him feeding yet. Awesome work.

Thanks, John

Hi Ivan,
A nice capture of this brimestone butterfly. I have seen some brimestone moths but never seen a butterfly. Perhaps these beauties are not seen here. Excellent composition and details. Pretty unusual POV but f/11 has solved the OOF problem. Excellent photography. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Marvelous image with superb depth of field, colors and details. Outstanding work Ivan, also thank you for the great notes that accompany your images.

Hallo Ivan
What a brilliant shot. A beautiful photo with excellent sharpness, and most delightful view. The details of both the flower and the butterfly are just eye-catching and I cannot really say the one is better than the other. My personal opinion I think the lavender flower wins with a few points. It is just because purple is my most favourite colour, and this flowers colour is so beautiful. The combination of colours of the flower and butterfly is great and it matches well together. A most appealing, bright and sunny sight. Thanks for sharing. I appreciated this one very much.
Kind regards
Anna

Ivan, I am happy to note you found this Brimstone in your garden recently. Looks like it has survived the winter.
It is a lovely capture showing the colours and veins on its wings clearly.
I noticed my first Cabbage White in late March this year and have posted two pictures of it already. Am I right in assuming that Brimstone and Cabbage White belong to the same genus?
My first specimen looked a little worse for the wear and seemed to have come out of hibernation.
I am posting another cabbage White today.
Best regards,
Ram

Bello conjunto.
