Tree Sparrow – Passer montanus

This species is common in our garden and at the moment they’re busy courting and performing nice displays around the garden. This one is having a rest for a while! It was captured from a distance of 5 metres with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

The Tree Sparrow is found in most parts of Europe and Asia as well as in northern Africa. It’s also been introduced to North America. It is very common in south and central Sweden while less so further north. It tends to be seen near human habitation. It has rather a weak flight and overwinters here.

The Tree Sparrow is smaller than a House Sparrow and quite lively. It has a chestnut brown head and nape (rather than grey), and white cheeks and collar with a contrasting black cheek-spot.

The Tree Sparrows usually build their nests in tree hollows that they line with dry grass, straw, feathers and other soft materaial. The female usually lays 5-6 eggs that are whitish with grey or brown spots. Male and female build the nest together and take turns brooding the eggs and feeding the young. They usually have two broods in the summer.

I far prefer the Tree Sparrow to the House Sparrow. It is less agressive and mixes well with other birds at the bird table. It often seeks food on the ground and feeds on insects, larvae, seed, buds and berries.

Hi Ulla , a nice photo of the tree sparrow , the details are ok and color good with nice composition. I can see by exif data that it was a low light photo , I also have a canon s series camera so can relate to the light / noise rate from that camera. one thing I really like about the camera is the noise seems to disappear in most prints.

Regards

Hola Ulla, muy bonita composición. Buenos detalles de este gorrion macho. Un saludo

Hola Sra. Ulla.
Great image of this popular little birg. It is hard to belive but they are a Lot of them around here, and I dont have a decent photo of them. You have a beautiful photo. Great work.
It is a great honor for me to be Your Neighbour this time.
Un Saludo Y un Abrazo.
Luis52.

Tree Sparrows are better looking than House Sparrows, Ulla.
This one has a lovely colour on its head.
The bird seems to be in no hurry to go elsewhere and you have got a sharp and crisp picture of it.
TFS and regards.

Hello Ulla,
Very beautiful photo of this Tree Sparrow. Good sharpness, natural colours and nice pose.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Ulla, Beautiful close up of this sparrow. Fine POV to see it's facial features and lovely rich colors. The composition is very pleasing amongst the branches and the bud adds life and a nice counterpoint. Maybe it's a bit oversharpened? Fine soft green BG. Tfs Richard

Hi Ulla

Great close-up - very good detail and pose. Nicely saturated colours also.

A fine macro shot and a beautiful composition, as usual Ulla, maybe a little too much sharpening in the breast area, but still, a good capture my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Ulla,

I love this little Sparrow who looks so soft and fluffy. It reminds me of our House Sparrows - I wonder if we have this one too. Exquisite details and textures of the face and plummage. A wonderful pose, lovely background and setting.

Jane

I now can see the subtle differences between the house sparrow and the tree sparrow..but in the filed I might have difficulty with a still....Very clear and nice natural tones. The fresh bud on the perch makes it just perfect.

Nice shot of this Sparrow, Ulla!
You've captured it in lovely soft lighting that cast no annoying shadows across the face.
Very good exposure and nice colours.
Some noise on the body but apart from that the photo is sharp and detailed.
Great DOF.
Well done,

Joe

Hi Ulla!

Very common, but still very nice! My wife and I love to observe "our" sparrows when they fly in to get the small crumbs we always lay down at the same place in the garden, just in front of the kitchen. You have put this bird very well on stage, and I especially like the unity of the colour tones. Moreover, the compsoition with the branches is perfect.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Ulla,

Good capture of this tree sparrow. Good composition. Good POV, DOF and focus. Beautiful colours. Perhaps have you cropped too much and tried to sharpen too much.
Cheers,
Mariki
