Glanville Fritillary - Melitaea cinxia

This was the first and only Fritillary that I’ve seen here so far this year! I found it in a sheltered and sandy place near our home. It was very windy at the time but I managed to get a couple of shots.

This butterfly has a wingspan of about 37- 46 mm. It is most easily identified by the black spots in each wing cell of the outer brownish/yellow band on both sides of the hind-wing. It used to be common in south and central Sweden but it is now in decline and is primarily found along the coasts of south Sweden. It likes dry sandy pastures, meadows and calcareous bed-rock. The female is here resting of the larval food plant Plantago lanceolata.

From Wikipedia: - “The Glanville Fritillary has got its name from Lady Eleanor Glanville, an eccentric 18th century English butterfly enthusiast – a very unusual occupation for a woman at that time. She was the first to capture British specimens in Lincolnshire during the 1690s. A contemporary wrote:
This fly took its name from the ingenious Lady Glanvil, whose memory had like to have suffered for her curiosity. Some relations that was disappointed by her Will, attempted to let it aside by Acts of Lunacy, for they suggested that none but those who were deprived of their senses, would go in Pursuit of butterflies. Moses Harris, 1776”

This was captured with the camera handheld from a distance of about 1 metre. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hi Ulla, lovely melitea, beautiful colors, great details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Super lighting. I went to you EXIF information to see if you used a higher ISO but it doesn't say...I guess from you distance and the shutter speed and good sun...it worked out so well...a bit of sharpening in PP doesn't show to me at all..If you had not said it, I would never have known. Great.
I want to share what I have been doing so Click Here:-)

Hola Sra. Ulla.
Bella presentacion. La primera impresion de este Macro es sin duda la exelente iluminacion que nos permite observar los detalles en las alas de la Mariposa, que por cierto es tambien muy bella. La nota escrita de gran valor.
Saludos Sra. Ulla.

Hello Ulla,
I just posted a Glanville Fritillary too, before I see yours! I like your shot because it shows also the Plantago, the plant associated to this butterfly. Very well done. TFS,

Hello Ulla ,

This is a very pleasing shot for its 'all-round' interest. Besides showing a very detailed and interestingly patterned butterfly, you have also shown, in equal detail, the important aspects of its environment. Well done.

kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Ulla,

A beautiful composition of this butterfly, stunning detail, and such a wonderful colour, really stands out well against the OOF background, perfect composition, all the best, Cheers Rick :)

There is another winged insect near the butterfly and it is equally sharp and distinct, Ulla.
The Fritillary is stunningly beautiful in this well-controlled shot.
The vegetation in the BG is effectively segregated from the subject and forms a nice backdrop for it.
But who is that second subject?
TFS and regards.

The DOF really isolates this butterfly against it's BG.
Well composed and a great parallel POV.
Superb light and natural colours.

Well done, Ulla!
