Queen of Spain Fritillary – Issoria lathonia

I found this lovely butterfly today on a Lantana by our patio. It is the first time this species has come to our garden!

This is a beautiful butterfly with a wingspan that can range from 35-50 mm. It is most easily recognised by the shiny silvery blotches on the underside of the hindwing. The larva feed on Viola tricolor and Viola arvensis. Viola tricolor is quite common around the woods here where they’re now building houses! It is a butterfly that favours dry meadows on sand or calcareous bedrock. It has a jerky and fast flight mostly near to the ground. It is not commonly seen in gardens! It hibernates as a small or half-grown larva and the butterfly appears in two broods in May-June and July-August.

This species only occurs in the southern half of Sweden and is quite rare. It is common in southern Europe but is also found in other parts of the world.

Hello Ulla,

This is just fabulous!
Not only is the butterfly superbly focussed and detailed but the leaves and the flowers look good, too.
The light is really good to bring out the colours and patterns on the wings.

As yet, we have had hardly any butterflies in our garden this year. I planted a buddleia earlier in the year in an attempt to entice them. We will have to see what happens!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Splendida macro di questa bellissima farfalla "grande viaggiatrice", eccellenti POV e composizione con il fiore che crea un bellissimo contrasto di colori, straordinaria nitidezza, molto belli i colori e BG. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Very fine details and colours mixed together. Add that to the natural surroundings which you have developed well in your garden and ....well it is like the line from the old move "Build it and they will come..." Some baseball fantasy but the words are so true. I know this for sure. If I don't put feed in my bird feeder, then it only takes 2 days for them to stop looking and reverse is true..So whatever you have that attracted this one...keep it:-)
