Heath Fritillary – Melitaea athalia

Like so many other insects this butterfly was drawn to my Coriander flowers. We’ve been lucky to have this butterfly in the garden every year and this is the first one to appear this year.

This Fritillary is common in Sweden. Its size and markings can vary considerably from dark brown to orange and from brightly marked to almost plain and it is therefore difficult to identify. Here in the south it has a wingspan of 35-48 mm while further north it is about 32-42 mm. The female is often larger than the male and her markings are often more variable.

The Heath Fritillary is found in sandy-soil areas near woods and in clearings with plenty of flowers. As part of our pine woods is being developed it will most probably be less common here in the future!

The larvae feed on Plantago, Melampyrum or Veronica. They are black with small, raised, white and pale green spots. The flight time in in Sweden is from mid June to end August.

It is a widespread and often abundant butterfly in continental Europe except for in the UK where it is protected, but in many countries it has declined.

This was taken with the camera handheld from a distance of 1/2 metre. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hi Ulla!

You present us a delicate picture, perfectly mastered on the technical side. It's not easy to manage a contrasted picture like this one keeping all the details in the whites. Very well done! Moreover, the flower, the insect and the butterfly are beautiful and your notes are interesting to read.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Ulla,
you did a very good job, the background plant makes it together with the colorful buttefly, an extremely good composition. NB: the wasp looks like Lestica sp. to me, what is your opinion?
