Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet - Zygaena lonicerae

This beautiful Moth is a threatened species in Sweden as its habitats are rapidly disappearing. It only occurs sparsely in the south-east. I found this near the coast in a forest clearing with plenty of Vipers Bugloss in flower. It has a wingspan of 30-41 mm.

Zigaena is a variable species with a number of subspecies and forms. This one is recognised by the five red spots on the front wings which are rather pointed and not transparent as those on the smaller Zigaena viciae. The hindwings are red with black edges. The antennae are long.

It is found on meadows, along minor roads and forest clearings where there are plenty of flowers. The larval foodplants are Clover and Vetch.

It is a day-flying Moth and In Sweden it is seen flying in July.

This was captured from a distance of about 40 cm with the camera handheld. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hi Ulla,

Before TN I never knew there were beautiful moths. The colors of this Zigaena are wonderful - what color combination is better than black and red? Details are excellent. Beautiful flower and the blue showing up in the blurred background is very attractive.

Jane

Hello Ulla, perfect close-up this beautiful Five-spot Burnet.
TFS and Kind regards,

Hello Ulla,

It must be quite exciting to capture an insect which is considered a rarity!
This is quite distinctive with its glossy black wings and big red spots.
The dof and composition are perfect.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Ciao Ulla,
meravigliosa cattura, eccellenti POV e composizione per la bellissima punteggiatura di macchie rosse della falena e di quelle bleu dello stupendo OOF BG, ottima definizione, molto belli i colori saturi e luminosi.
Grazie e complimenti.
Maurizio

Hi Ulla

Lovely capture of the Burnet Moth, its was actually one of these that led me to TN, I seen one of them in my Garden and a search on Google led me to a pic on TN, never seen another in my Garden though :o(
Very nice details and a fine DOF leaving a lovely OOF BG of greens and lilacs.
I like the light too with the black wings giving off the blue sheen.

Hi Ulla,
This is a very interesting moth,I've never seen one like that!
Wonderful capture of this rare insect, great sharpness and nice vivid colours.
Great work
Lise

I am always impressed by the number of different species you are able to find and photograph...even this threatened rare one.

It's a nie sharp capture against a nice, soft variegated background.

A stunning and most colourful image Ulla. This is one which might for me, go right to the print shop! Really...it is very diverse to say it maybe perversely...the colours are divine! And they are as well saturated without being too much so. It is a slight of hand trick you play from time to time. You, as do I, switch techniques...perhaps you do not know it...but your uniqueness is very elusive...and in a round about way...that is what makes photography a "fine art"!
Bob

Good Morning Ulla,

Have a nice new week!

Hi Ulla!

Wow, I've never seen this moth in my life. You're really lucky. Nice composition and pose with opened wings and blurred BG. Looks like these kind of moths like blue flowers very much.

Hi Ulla, splendid Zygaena with fantastic colors, great details, and splendid sharpness, superb composition, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Ulla

Although there are plenty beautiful moths, this one must surely count as one of the best looking moths. The brilliant red spots look striking on the shimmering black wings.

You have captured good details of the insect and have isolated it perfectly from the BG to make it stand out nicely in full view.

Well done and TFS.

Hi Ulla,
This is wonderful Ulla..really :)
The iridescent turquoise looks great on the black combined with the orange spots of his rare and beautiful moth..
And the OOF purple spots of the BG make it "spot-on" :)

Merhaba Ulla,

I can assume it is not a common experience to come face to face with this kind of a beautiful moth, Ulla.
So every time some TN member posts a picture of it, I'm thrilled to look at it.
As I am seeing this image on my office machine, I just can't describe how beautiful it looks to me.
Thanks and regards.
Ram
