[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the Red Longhorn Beetle (Stictoleptura rubra), that Linnaeus named according to the colour of the female that has a striking brick red thorax and abdomen. This image is that of a male, the body being almost 2cm (0.8 inch) long, but it is not at all red.

It is fairly common in S. Sweden where there are flowery meadows near to coniferous forests and is widespread in most of Europe except the British Isles.
It tends to be attracted to white flowers. The larvae develop in dead softwood, often spruce or pine stumps.
This is one of over 120 species of Longhorn Beetles (Cerambicidae)in Scandinavia.

This is another image taken with my new Canon G9 that is useful for closer macros. ISO 80.

The image was slightly sharpened after moderate cropping and size reduction.
This time I used NeatImage to remove BG noise.

Hi Ivan.
Once more great use of nice camera. It (with your help) produces crisp sharp images. Sharpness and details are fantastic. Lights and colours are so amazing. However, especially I like terrific 3D-effect and nice blurred BG. Great close-up in every respect. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.

Very nice shot,Ivan!
Sharpness, details and colors are marvellous. TFS

Amicalement Robi

I think I can see...only ever so slightly, the colour which you refer. My macro lens is really not good enough to get this close in, so I have not much to compare in my catalogue with some exceptions... I have to wing it by saying it certainly is a technically good piece and well balance colours. As to the insect, well all things in nature eh? It is not a particularly "pretty" bug, however open heart surgery is not pretty either...yet all thing....all...
Bob

Hi Ivan, great capture of beatiful bug with fine details and splendid sharpness, perfect focus, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Ivan,

It is unusual for the female to be brightly coloured in the animal world! Your excellent notes explain why this beetle got its name!

The details are excellent. I never observed so clearly how the antennae are segmented!

Very well placed image for best composition.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Ivan,

It didn't take you any time at all to master the G9. Wonderful macro and your notes are always so informative. Excellent details of this beetle with the very long antennae. Nice natural colors and as in all your photos a wonderful composition.

Jane

Hi Ivan!

As you wrote, male isn't very red :-) Hard to capture, always moving between grasses and even harder to exposure. You did good job here with beetle well visible against BG, sharp and with nice colours.

Hello Ivan,

What a good way to present this insect! Composition is very good as the format you have chosen suits the subject and left placed stems give stability to whole composition. DOF is well used as most of insects body is in focus and even tiny details can be observed.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Ivan,
That's again a beetle we meet often in the Alps. You succeded in making an interesting picture, having the Stictoleptura rubra placed in an ideal diagonal way. Good light to show all details from antennae to the back.
Un grand merci
Anne
