Green Woodpecker - Picus viridis

Around 7.30 pm last night as the sun was beginning to set, my attention was drawn to a loud call outside the window when I was busy at my computer. I quickly looked out and was surprised to see a juvenile Green Woodpecker on the lawn. I rushed to get my S2IS out of its bag and managed to get a few shots through the treble glazing. I have never seen this species in the garden before but it is often heard in the Pine woods around us as there are plenty of Wood Ants which is its favourite food. Fully grown it is a large bird, 30–34 cm in length with a 45–50 cm wingspan. It is conspicuous in its green and red colours while you often hear the loud call before you notice it as it has a very smooth flight.

The sandy soil in our garden is a haven for smaller ants and that’s what this juvenile was busily looking for here.

“From early in the year until summer the loud ringing plue, plue, plue is a typical woodland call, often described as a laugh, and from which the bird gets one of its names, "Yaffle". Folklore has associated this "song" with a threat of rain, and another name is "Rain bird", but weather has little to do with the bird's calls. Though it has been heard to "drum" upon wood, it certainly does not use this call so frequently as the spotted woodpeckers. The alarm note is the laugh emphasised and harshened. ”Extract from WIkipedia

The Green Woodpecker occurs in most parts of Europe, and in western Asia.

This was taken through a treble-glazed window with the camera handheld. It has been cropped very slightly and sharpened.

Hi Ulla,
Lucky you with this capture, and so close!
And even more lucky to have had enough time to pick up the camera and got the shoots done before he flown away.
These are so beautiful birds, and you caught it in this very good pose to show us all the colours and patterns of its plumage.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
My best regards,
JM

Hello Ulla,
Great luck and excellent shot. woodpecker have very surprised pose. All details are very sharp.
Regards, Pawel

Hello Ulla. Excellent framing of this pecker on the ground. Tact sharp detail with perfectly metered exposure. Very pleasing to look at. Well done! Jusni

What a interesting bird you have pictured. Beautiful shot with great colours and focus. Well done.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Ulla,
Very good capture of this Green Woodpecker which I believe isn't that common in Sweden. The result is very good for a shot through treble-glazed window. There is only very little blur on the head which may have resulted by that or partly by the long exposure time (movement). The details are very sharp, composition good and colours bright and natural.

This is a strange looking bird Ulla. I can't say I like his colours or patterns, but it is a good capture by you, considering you shot through a lot of glass.
Well done
Janice

Hello Ulla,

Hello Ulla,

You captured it in time and presented here so nicely of this Green Woodpecker for us. Plumage and the inquisitive stare are very nice.Rarely I've seen woodpeckers on the ground.

Thanks for sharing

Hello Ulla,
What a beautiful shot! I hear often the loud of this nice woodpecker but it's really difficult to take a shot of it and so close. It is a very clever and shy bird. You are very lucky to see it so close. Congratulations for your good exposure and sharpness in difficult conditions (window and late in the afternoon). Best regards,
Catherine

ASUSTADIZA AVE QUE CREO QUE TAMBIÉN TENEMOS POR AQUÍ. BIEN CAPTADA Y ENCUADRADA Y CON CASI TODO SU CUERPO DENTRO DEL ENFOQUE. NATARURALIDAD Y BELLEZA EN LOS COLORES DE SU PLUMAJE. INTERESANTE SU CAPTURA EN EL SUELO.

Nice way is worthy imitation. All is brilliant: pictured model, capturing person and quality of the image. Superb diagonal composition. Amazing colours and great details of all pictured objects including surroundings. Bravo. Outstanding job.

Hi Ulla, not only green i can see..ehehe..very very nice and colored bird,i like a lot your perfect way to capture and to show us the fantastics colors, excellent the details too,my best compliments for the pic and for the note, have a nice weekend,Luciano

I have had terrible results imaging through glass. this lens must be a very pricey one...as it surely does better than mine which was close to only 150 US dollars...and when I used converters...for film, they were about 20-30 US dollars. today's extenders have to carry much information so the price went through the roof...
Good catch on the computer:-) I have had the same thing happen but my computer is closer to a wall than a window...although the one I do have is screened...Very nice colourings on the bird...and one more which I had no idea existed..

Hi Ulla,

It was so nice of him to let you know he was there! Lucky you - he waited for you. You managed a wonderful shot of this beautiful woodpecker. Nice to see one in a pose like this instead of on a tree. Beautiful colors and excellent details. I love his eye and the wonderful shade of red on the top of his head.

Hello Ulla,
Just superb picture and simply amazing shot. Strong focus and great clarity. Ganesh

Marvellous capture through triple glazing, Ulla. The clarity is unbelievable [and so must be the spick and span condition of your windows] :)!
I like the colours on this young Woodpecker.
Regards.

Hello Ulla!

Good to have such visitors outside window :-) I must say this is extraordinary photo. Subject is beautifull and rare, conditions to take this shot were poor and your cam also isn't dSLR, but you did great job here! Bird is colorfull, sharp and catched in interesting pose. Congratulations! I saw similiar specie only once, but pictures from my old Canon S2 were awful.

Beautiful colours and patterns with a nice harmony, lovely details,
great pic also very good presentation, bravo ulla.

hello ulla,
fine capture of the green wood pecker, from the pose of the bird it seems that you have taken her by surprise, nice eye contact, well composed shot,

Wow, Ulla! What a catch!
I have never seen a woodpecker on the ground before!
You have achieved excellent details of its plummage despite the rush to capture it!
What an alert pose it is showing!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

What an interesting woodpecker and unusual color. Taken handheld through 3 glass panes... My goodness! It is very sharp and your windows are very clean!!!

Merhaba Ulla,

Hello Ulla!
Let's start the Swedish day! ;)
Very nice picture of Green Woodpecker, I observed this species only a few times. Nice pose of the bird, rather unusual as for woodpeckers ;>
I like natural colours and good sharpness too.
TFS and have a nice Saturday!
Greetings,
Radomir
