I was surprised the other day when I found a little larva in the middle of a Scabious flower. This golden Moth seemed as surprised as me when it landed and inspected it!!

Eilema lutarellum

This is a moth with a wingspan of 24-30 mm. The wings are yellow to golden with a silky lustre. It is found in dry and sunny, rocky or sandy areas, heaths and open woodlands. It is fairly common in Sweden and flies during July-August. It overwinters in the larval stage and the larvae feed on lichens and wilted plants.

Epirrita dilutata November Moth larva

This is a moth with a wingspan of 38-44 mm. The wings of this moth are whitish/grey to blackish/brown with dark markings and cross-bands. It flies in October-November hence the name. The larvae feed on on a wide variety of trees and shrubs as well as fruit trees.

This was captured from a distance of 20 cm with the camera handheld. It was pretty windy at the time. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hi Ulla,
A lovely capture of this moth and the caterpillar. Very well composed with sharp details. Perhaps a little more brightness was to be added. Anyway still looks very good. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ulla,

I love the caption! You captured the moth and larva perfectly. Wonderful timing to get this before the moth flew away. Excellent details of both - beautiful colors of insects and flower. Congratulations on this very unique shot.

Hi Ulla,

The subjects are nice and sharp with good detail and the flower moving towards a bit of softness at the back which makes the image pleasing to look at. Well done.

HA HA! Now that's funny Ulla. there is a book here that my wife read to our kids called "Are You my Mother?". It is quite popular among parents of younger kids...and this is a great title for the image. You must have had some sort of inspiration. You knew you had a great photo, but it needed a suiting title to make it fun...Great show!

Hi Ulla.
Very nice and funny title and very impressive rare scene. Bravo. Perfect pictured moment. I like charming level of light underexposure (I think this is a result of use of spot metering mode). Lighting and colours are soft and very pleasant. Main subject – two insects and fine flowers - is reproduced very nicely too. My best wishes and thanks for so nice shot.

Hello Ulla, Lovely composition of having both of them in the same flower. Excellent clarity and sharp picture. Ganesh

Hello Ulla,

They do seem to be conversing!
A good shot for us because we get to inspect two creatures and each helps us to understand the scale.
Sharp focus and interesting details of the creatures and the flower.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
