First I will thank all for the nice comments and words of my last post.

Today’s post is q quite rare bird, the Arctic Redpoll, I don’t know if we have seen it before on TN. It’s very like the Red Poll as they can differs in colors and brightness. Often they are impossible to separate from the common Redpoll.
But in this case I had a lot of help to get the right ID, it’s taken at the birdclubs feeding station, and I had company with 3 other bird photographers and 3 experience bird watchers from the birdclub. The Arctic Poll have almost no markings on the belly and have white spots on the back and have a smaller red spot on the head.
They live far north but in the winter they can migrate to south in company with big flocks of Red Poll.
It’s taken with my 300mm and 2x extender. I’m sorry the picture is not of the best quality with busy BG but it’s the best picture so far.
Maybe I get a new chance before they return north.
It was also a nice birthday present. :-)
I hope you like this Arctic Poll.

The Arctic Redpoll, Carduelis hornemanni, is a species of the finch family, Fringillidae. It breeds in tundra birch forest. It has two subspecies, C. h. hornemanni (Greenland Arctic Redpoll) of Greenland and neighbouring parts of Canada, and C. h. exilipes, which breeds in the tundra of northern North America (where it is known as the Hoary Redpoll) and Eurasia. Many birds remain in the far north; some birds migrate short distances south in winter, sometimes travelling with Common Redpolls.
The Greenland race is a very large and pale bird, with the male sometimes described as a "snowball", but both forms are pale with small beaks, white rumps and often more yellow than grey-brown tones in their plumage. The females are more streaked on their breasts, sides and rumps, but are still pale.
The binomial commemorates the Danish botanist Jens Wilken Hornemann.

Hi Gert,
Yesterday I was browsing your photos in one of the photos you have mentioned not to give any points. Is it applicable till now or it was for only that particular post. A beautiful capture of this Arctic Redpoll. Excellent sharp details and a lovely composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hej Gert,
Congratulations on not only capturing a rare Swedish species, but on taking such a fine portrait of it! In fact it is the best shot of Snösiskan that I have seen! Technically it is superb with fine sharpness and light management and the low side POV on the snow is excellent.
I think it has been posted on TN before from Canada, where it is also called the Hoary Redpoll.
Thanks for sharing this rare beauty,
Hälsningar,
Ivan

Hi Gert. I see you still have some snow about. I was watching some Redpolls today i was surprised how many feed on the ground when a feeder was there. You have taken this one with fine detail and natural looking colours. well done TFS. All with interesting notes.

Hi Gert!

It's fine to notice that there are still rare animals shown on TN. Your posting is a very valuable testimony. From the technical side, I see that your whites are almost burnt and the whole picture is a little bit bright. But this does not change anything to the fact it is very pleasant to look at. Your notes are very instructive and interesting, too.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Gert,

You must have been thrilled to get such a fine capture of a rare bird! I think this little Arctic Redpoll was saying happy birthday to you - I love the opened beak. Your notes are very interesting and show how hard it can be to properly identify some birds.

Jane

Gert good shot with the focus of the bird. Lovely eye catch. Well done Ganesh

Guess it was a difficult situation to shoot this with all those whites, but you have managed to get a good shot of the bird with all details intact. The catch light is special and its really a cute looking bird. The whites below the tail can be subdued further by a burn tool in PS is what i feel! what do you think?

Gert,

Nice capture of the Red Poll. You have done a very good job of getting the detail in the white of the bid and yet not OS the snow and loose detail there. The seed in the beak tops it off.

Nice job.

Bob

Hi Gert.
Once more excellent shot with stunning exposure and excellent sharpness. You are a brave man to use such heavy lens but it is amazing as well as the shots taken with its help. Low POV is great as well as right composition of the picture. DOF is superb especially for used lens combination. Thanks and kind wishes.
Alexei.
