We are back after spending a few days on the island of Öland off the SE coast.

I would like to thank all who visited my gallery while I was away.

Öland is 137 km (85 miles) long and only 16 km (10 miles) wide at the widest point. After Gotland it is the second largest island in Sweden and like Gotland, it consists of limestone.
The southern half of the island has a unique environment consisting of partly open flat limestone called the Alvar. This provides a unique habitat that is world famous with a very interesting flora and fauna.
This little moth is a part of this marvellous wildlife:

Parmelia Footman (Setina roscina)
Swedish name: Mindre borstspinnare.

This moth has a wingspan of about 2cm. Though it is quite plentiful on the Alvar in Scandinavia it is only found in Öland and sparsely in Gotland.

It belongs to the Tiger moth family (Arctiidae) and is sparsely distributed in Europe and N. Asia where the habitat is right. The larval food consists of various species of lichens that grow in profusion on the limestone rocks. It flies in late may and June. The males are seen flying low over the ground to occasionally settle on the vegetation. The females tend to remain on the ground and fly little.

The WORKSHOP shows how it normally settles. the main image shows an inusual open-wing view.

The English name refers to the type of lichen that the larvae feed on and the Swedish name refers to the brush-like tip of the male abdomen.

This was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of 1.8 meters (6 ft). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

This species is a first on TN

Hallo Ivan
My compliments to a colourful and most beautiful photograph. What a delightful view. The details of both the backdrop and the moth with its tissue paper wings is truly eye-catching. The combination of colours and the detail on the moth's wings are great. A most appealing and bright and sunny sight. You have used the light well, emphasizing the golden colours of the moth. I also like the fine web threads on the branches. Could that be of a spider? Thanks for sharing. Best regards. Anna

Good morning Ivan,
thank you for posting this nice picture of an Endrosinae which are rarely shown at TN.
In some alpine areas/habitats you can see them flying after you have disturbed them by walking through the vegetation.
I think I will 'try' this summer!
The specimen is clearly presented. I like the natural setting and the natural colours, as is usual for your pictures.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Ivan.
Very special picture. I like it a lot. Dark key of execution is so impressive. Tree branches pattern is amazing as well as presentation of the beautiful moth. Its colouration and shapes are unusual. As always quality of the picture is great with excellent details of the main subject and pleasant bokeh. Well done and warm wishes.
Alexei.

Good picture and interesting note too. liked this specimen and did a small workshop to recompose and adjusted highlights

Hello Ivan,
Almost every moth isn't so attractive for photo as a butterfly but from near look very interesting and often I see first time many species. Most of them are in shadows and hard to obtain good light. Your look very well, good sharpness of the details and composed very well.
Regards, Pawel

Hello Ivan,

Hi Ivan,
a very lovely and soft coloured moth. The branch really give a good impact to the composition. i love seeing this moth in such a silent pose.

regards,
Foozi.

NB: I think it is appropriate to have the format of the comment /critique. To me it is OK and the feed back is very helpful of course. It is short and precise.

Hi Ivan

Good to see your still posting here. I been very busy at work the past two months, but hopefully I will now have time to post a few more goodies from my trip around teh world.

Good shot of the moth, but I going to be picky cause I can still see a bit of noise around the antenae and teh branches(he he). Never mind, it illustrates this unusual species fine and its probably a new species for TN.

cheers
Chris

hello Ivan,
Very interesting picture made with great artistic sense. I love the fine colors and the way you composed the picture. This moth is really a beauty, I never have seen it until now. Thanks also for your note. I also made some pictures of moths, but it is so difficult to find out the ID.
Have a nice afternoon
Anne

Hola Sr. Ivan.
Saludos Sr. Ivan.

Hi Ivan,

This is one of the prettiest moths I have seen. Both views are wonderful but the open-winged position is just beautiful. It looks great on the bare branches giving a terrific contrast to the light colored wings. Pretty dotted patterns shown in fine detail. A lovely setting and composition.

Hello Ivan!

Brrrrrrr...this picture looks like taken in late autumn...but fortunatelly spring is around :-) Rather dark colours of BG which underlined moth nicely. Insect itself looks great. Very interesting moth, I've never seen similiar specie. Interesting note, too.

Hello Ivan
What a wonderfull shot of this nice moth, i like his pose on this branches, great POV and DOF with very good 3D effekt, beautiful contrast between the white Parmelia Footman and the dark BG
superb details on tree and moth
Have a nice WE
Jacqueline

The rough looking branch is very significant in the presentation of this special Moth, Ivan. It adds beauty to the composition.
The image, as usual, is very sharp and has natural colours.
Thanks for sharing it and regards.

Hi Ivan
A very special post. First time on TN ;-) I like grey background and natural surrounding. There are some noises associated with sharpening. Despite this little problem a very good shot
