[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
One of the problems when using a compact camera is that though most of the subject is in focus a fine neutral bokeh BG is difficult to achieve. The result is often a sharp subject with a busy BG.

I discovered that one way of meeting this problem is to use a low shutter value. Here the use of f 3.2 would have made a sharp image with a good DOF impossible when using a DSLR, irrespective of the lens. But with compact camera a low F value still allows sharpness with a good DOF, but also gives an OOF natural BG.
So I suggest that those of you using compact cameras might try taking macros using low F-stops. You still get the sharpness and you achieve a better BG with a higher shutter-speed as a bonus.

If I used my DSLR with this setting I would have had a fine blurred BG but most of the subject would also have been blurred and to achieve this sharpness and DOF I would have needed a very small aperture and a tripod,

But life is not that simple! Using my DSLR and long lens I could take a shot of him at a distance of nearly two meters.
Here I had to creep close to (about 30 cm, about a foot) to my subject that I scared away several times before I could get close enough to take this. Hard work for an old man!

Silver-studded Blue male Plebejus argus

Swedish name: Ljungblċvinge, meaning ‘Heather Blue’

In Sweden this butterfly is relatively common in dry meadows and heathlands with limey soils and in Europe it is one of the most widespread and common Lycaenid blues.

Here I managed to get a good view of both the upper and under surfaces of the wings of this freshly-emerged male. Notice the broad white edges and the blue fading to black near the edge, which is typical for the species.
He has settled on the flowers ofYellow Lucerne (Medicago falcata)

After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was selectively sharpened.

This species has been posted many times before on TN.

Your image is very good and your note is extremely useful.Congratulation and thanks for this!
Horia

Hello Ivan,
a wonderful picture of the Silver-studded Blue taken using a compact camera, your note is very useful, but i have a compact camera with fixed programmes and i am not able to use it well; superb sharpness and splendid colours well saturated, POV and composition are excellent.
TFS
Best regards
Maurizio

TFS thanks for sharing

Hi Ivan,
A very very important and useful note. Very good capture of this Silver-studded Blue . Sharp details and a nice OOF BG. Very well composed. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan
Excellent note - I sometimes think it's almost worth having a compact on hand to achieve this kind of shot, particularly when light conditions are poor. My DSLR macro lens is a fixed 100mm and a shot such as this requires a setting of around f/13 to gain a similar DOF. This means you have to compensate with both ISO and shutter speed.
The shot goes to show that sometimes you don't need heavy and expensive equipment to take a quality image. Very good details and well exposed.
Kind Regards
Vinny

Bonjour Ivan,
Even if this butterfly is well-known, we don't see it so much on TN. Magnificent picture giving us view on both wing-sides and especially showing the little blue spots on the hindwings. I have also taken a picture of this species lately. I agree with your use of a low F-stop. Personnaly I use it very often.
Thanks also for your ID-suggestion for my last picture.
Hello to Ulla too. Next week I will be mostly in my chalet in the mountains.
A bientôt
Anne

Hello Ivan!

Thank you for tips. I haven't similiar problem with my old Canon, because it have good zoom. At 420mm and f4,5 most pictures have blurred BG and sharp main subject. Taking photos with dSLR is very different :-)

Good to see new specie from Lycaenidae. This Blue looks very good with great sharpness and deep blue colours. Good composition with both sides of wings clearly visible.

Hi,
Fine points on using compact camera with beautiful supportive image. Yes, you got fairly diffused background but as you mentioned nothing like using slr with long or macro lens. tfs.

Hi Ivan. useful information about the camera. You have been able to get a fine OOF BG with this close up of the Silver-studded Blue Butterfly. Which you have taken with fine detail and colours.well done tFS.

Hello Ivan
superb shot of this Silver-studded Blue with wings half open wings, so we can see the outside and the inside markings, the butterfly and the yellow lucerne flower
are very well focused, great lighting and lovely colors
your note is very interesting, i will try to remember your advice
Have a good night
Jacqueline

hello Ivan

the first part of your notes i liked very much, it is like a lesson
on digital photo, and it is true that sometimes with a DSLR
we can not obtain all the foreground in focus like this photo,
excellent photo with fine POV and framing, all the foreground
in focus with excellent sharpness and details, and i personally
love to see details on the blurred background, TFS

Hello Ivan,
I think that result which you obtained because focal length here about 9mm. DSLR cameras very rare have lens with 12mm and more. For f/3.2 DOF is very short, if focal length is 100mm and more then DOF is very very shallow. I taught physics at school pretty much.
Regards, Pawel

Hi Ivan

Good to see you struggling to get a shot (lol).
Great POV, composition, sharpness and details.
A fine shot with the compact.

Chris

Very interesting POV to esalt the DOF and splendid colours. Very good details.

Hi Ivan,

I love this view of the beautiful butterfly showing both sides of the wings. The colors are exceptionally lovely. Fine details of the pretty wing markings - the white edging is beautiful. I appreciate your notes and I hope I remember what you said when the occasion arises.

Jane

Hello Ivan ! Congratulation on beeing able to get close to this butterfly - they always fly away when I come close ! I must been too clumsy, I suppose ! :-) And the picture is simply amazing, you show us that we can do very beautiful photos even with a compact camera. I love the fact that almost all the butterfly is in focus, and the the BG is blurred. I also like the vivid colors, the composition, the details. Very well done !
Valérie.

Hi Ivan
Such a pretty butterfly you captured. The colour of this Silver-studded Blue is a nice compliment to his surroundings, the colours are blend nicely together. Your notes are very helpful, I sometimes bring my point and shoot camera too and I find it more of a challenge to use. Are you living in or visiting Alberta?

Hello Ivan,

You achieve an amazing 3D effect here, by combining a good angle on the insect and an accurate DoF!
Silky-crisp texture in the wings, the beautiful pattern is perfectly reproduced...
A delicate image, a treat to my eyes!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Ivan,
good note on the technical aspect of using the compact camera. Really appreciate the sharing.
This nice looking blue is beautifull indeed. the payterns are seen in detail and the bokeh you get is excellent.
The light allows this shot to be a pretty one with the flowers clear and sharp too.
Beautiful capture of the blue with its natural surroundings.

Regards,
Foozi
