[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Our autumn has been cut short by freezing temperatures and threat of snow even in the south of Sweden, but recently before this cold spell we had a sunny afternoon when I went to a local nature reserve. I took this on the fence of the reserve car park.

Black Darter (Sympetrum danae)

Swedish name: Svart ängstrollslända, meaning ‘black meadow dragonfly’. The Swedish term for darter is ‘meadow dragonfly’.

The Black Darter is fairly common and widespread in most of Europe except the Mediterranean region, especially in areas with acid water, but it is also found in areas with basic waters such as we have in our area. It is quite common in the whole of Sweden.

It is the smallest species of darter in Europe.

The male is almost totally black when mature and it is the only black darter in Europe. The female is attractively marked with black and yellow, a row of three yellow spots on the black bar on her side being diagnostic.
It is found as an adult from the second half of summer to most of the autumn.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my long lens hand held and after moderate cropping it was selectively sharpened. The afternoon autumn sunshine was shining directly on him

Hi Ivan. It sounds as if winter is arriving early with you. This Black Darter was taken with fine detail and sharp focusing. I like the shadows of the wings on the wood . We can see the black markings on the wing tips. All with natural colours. TFS.

Hi Ivan

Sorry to hear about your weather, our "spring" isn't doing much better. A recent cold snap killed all the butterflies and dragons that had emerged, could not find one subject on the weekend and the forecast this weekend doesn't look much better!!

Nice shot of this black darter with a damaged hind leg, I guess here wouldn't survive the cold snap either. Good sharpness and a reasonable composition on the fence post :).

Chris

Buen control y trabajo con la luz, que se plasman sobre todo en los bellos reflejos de la alas en la madera. Buena composición también con un atractivo juego de colores.
Saludos Ivan.
