Small Tortoiseshell Aglais urticae

Swedish name: Nässelfjäril, meaning ‘nettle butterfly’.

This is the third time I post this common species on TN. I promise not to bore TN viewers with more repetitions of this popular European butterfly, but as it goes into hibernation at this time of year, it is time to look for them indoors and help them survive.

It is common and widespread in practically the whole of Europe.
Like other nettle-dependent relatives, such as I. Io, V. atalanta and A levana, the Small Tortoiseshell is more common where there is human habitation and the enrichment of the soil encourages the growth of nettles.

Though they overwinter as adults in outhouses during warm years they can produce three generations and fly well into the autumn, like this one warming itself on our rockery.

In N. Europe both the Peacock and Small Tortoiseshell butterflies seek buildings in which to hibernate. As the warm dryness of modern houses kills them they should be let out if they happen to fly indoors when seeking a place to hibernate.
Just take one gently with cupped hands and release it into a cold garage or outhouse. Try to remove excessive amounts of cobwebs as they can get caught and end up as prey for spiders

I took this shot at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my long lens hand-held. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Your picture of the Tortoiseshell is superb. The perfect sharpness reveals fine details. I also like the diagonal orientation of the butterfly. This creates a fine perspective.

Hi Ivan. This one looks in perfect condition . You were lucky to have got so close with your long lens. Which has given you first class detail and sharp focusing. The bright sun light has given such natural warm colours. It would be nice to see this survive the winter to start the young for next year. well taken TFS.

Hello Ivan, Excellent work that we face today. I am very pleased contrast and use of the fund. The details of the insect are very good and the color looks great although we note that the light was hard to handle. This is an excellent set. Congratulations.

Hallo Ivan
The colours in this image is just magic. The colour and patterns on this butterfly's wings reminds me of a burning fire that is scorching hot. It is indeed a warm and vivid selection of colour in contrast with one another. The grey stone in the background is just the right thing to bring the wonderful details of this insect out to its best. I like what I see and the overall image is very pleasing to the eye.
Thanks for sharing and my best regards.
