This is a new species for TN

Click Beetle species, Ampedus sanguineus

Swedish name: 'Blodröd knäppare', meaning 'blood-red click beetle'.

The family Elateridae is commonly called click beetles (or "typical click beetles" to distinguish them from the related Cerophytidae and Eucnemidae), elaters, snapping beetles, spring beetles or "skipjacks". They are a cosmopolitan beetle family characterized by the unusual click mechanism they possess. There are a few closely related families in which a few members have the same mechanism, but all elaterids can click. A spine on the prosternum can be snapped into a corresponding notch on the mesosternum, producing a violent "click" which can bounce the beetle into the air. Clicking is mainly used to avoid predation, although it is also useful when the beetle is on its back and needs to right itself. There are about 9300 known species worldwide. (Wikipedia)

There are 18 species of this genus in Sweden and they are difficult to tell apart.

We found this under the bark of a dead pine tree. It is about 15 mm long

It is found in most parts of Sweden and N. Europe where there are pine forests. If it ever occurred in the UK it is now extinct.

The eggs are laid under the bark of dead pines where the larvae feed on the rotting wood and take several years to develop.

This shot was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters with the camera supported on a tripod. After slight cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened, adjusted for shading and converted from RAW to JPEG.

Bonsoir Ivan,
A very interesting posting and something new to discover. Interesting to read about the Click Beetles. I think that I have some shots of the same Beetle-family in my archives, however they have more purple and brown coloration.
Un posting précieux!
Un grand merci
Amitiés
Anne

Hi Ivan, Superb capture of this new species of Beetle on TN my good friend, splendid lighting with lovely natural colours, nice and sharp, great stuff here Ivan and have a wonderful weekend,
Best Regards,

Pauly.

This is certainly the very first appearance of this Beetle on TN, Ivan.
The black thorax and the red abdomen make an appealing colour combination. The wooden plank also goes well for the background.
At this time of the year, some very pleasant surprises from summer collections come out and this one is one of the best from yours.
Best regards,
Ram

Hello Ivan,
Great shot on natural setting. Sharp and crisp image. The red color is quite attractive. Instead of camouflage this beetle chooses to scare off predator.
JC
