[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today’s post is a Goosander (female).
She was sitting on stone in the dark side of the small lake.
Some light came down trough the trees so I could get a picture.
The colours in the water is reflection from the trees and the bushes on the bank.
Pity that I didn’t get the whole reflection of the bird.
She is always alone and always sitting on this stone, I think she has some problems with her left wing.

Some info about the goosander.

If Mergansers look scruffy then Goosanders look immaculate, especially the males, their big bodies entirely cream-coloured apart from a neat black line across the back and the contrasting black-looking head. Females might be mistaken for red-head Mergansers but see how the rich chestnut colour on the head ends abruptly at the neck and contrasts neatly with the pale chest. Also, the white wing panel lacks a dark line through it and the bill distinctively droops down at the tip instead of being swept up. The crest can look shaggy but a neatly hanging mane is more typical. In flight Goosanders have similar wing markings to Mergansers but the male Goosander has much more white on his body and the female lacks the dark line through the pale wing panel

ISO 800, Raw-format, One-shot autofocus. Manual exposure, handheld camera
Convert, Levels, Contrast, Crop, resized to 800 pixels, USM on the B/W channel in lab-colours. I used Adobe Photoshop CS2 for PP, NI 5 pro+ plugin.

Wonderful shot Gert.
I just love the lighting and composition.
Colour is really good too.
The texture of the ripples and tail complement each other perfectly,and I love that gold sheen on the water.

lovely photo - colours and lighting a spot one. the only concern is the lack of head in the reflection. Is the picture about the Goosander or the reflection?

I would have liked to have seen the whole reflection in the water. Excellent work.

I almost Got about five on a rock reflecting in the water. Fumbled, I ended up shooting them in the water instead. Bonus, I'll post it on TreK L. on monday.

Hi Gert,
wonderful pose and composition, the yellow highlights in the water are wonderful. The reflection you mentioned. Only other nit is that the bird appears a bit flat. My guess is motion-blur by the bird (at 1/250), as the rest of the picture has a lot of depth and detail.

Excellent composition and pov, great sharpness as usual.

I like the reflection upon the water. What a pity the head of the bird is missing, but, of course, it's not a problem at all.

Wonderful capture.It looks like a painting picture from a great artist;)Lighting is amazing.I liked POV,reflections on water and composition a lot.Thanks for sharing this beauty...;-)

Although I am fond of square images, I found this one extremely pleasing. The mix of textures, the different blotches of colours and the reflections in the water give this image a definite oil painting quality. The contrasts are striking. As usual in your photos, Gert, details are very sharp, and the composition is exquisite. My list of favourites is getting longer.
