[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Though the Large Skipper (Ochlodes sylvanus) is common in C. and S. Sweden and most of Europe it isn't often one sees several together. They appear to be territorial, the males behaving rather like the male Small Copper by vigorously chasing away any intruder. They patrol their territory settling on various places but when a female comes along he can detect her scent and begins to fly around her in a tight spiral and they both take a rapid flight that leads to mating.

This is a female that lacks the black sex band of scented scales on each male forewing that are released in flight to predispose the female to mating.

Large skipper larvae feed on coarse grasses, rolling the edges of the grass blade around them while they feed. As coarse grasses are more common around human habitation, Large Skippers are often found near towns and gardens.

I took this shot at a distance of about two meters with my camera hand-held.

Hi Ivan!
You refer to the "black sex band" on the forewing in your note that diffrentiates the male from the female. Very subtle observation which I need to verify by looking at some more pictures of Skippers I have before posting them here :-).
Very sharp and clear image of a female Skipper from an impressive POV. The image has a 3D quality to it.
TFS and bye.

Hello Ivan,
beautiful picture of the skipper. Extra-sharp!
The skipper-characteristic antennae tips are nicely presented and in addition ... the rest of the butterfly. Superb point of view and composition. Nice natural colours.
Best wishes, Peter

P.S. Nu på fredag & lördag är jag i dina trakter och lite hjälp att hitta fåglar skulle varit jätte nice. Om du har tid och lust att träffas skulle varit ännu bättre...
