The yellow butterflies of the Pieridae family, most probably this species, the Brimstone have given rise to the name 'butterfly' in England during the eighteenth century.

The Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) is one of the most long-lived adult butterflies in Europe. It can emerge in July, hibernates in low vegetation during the winter, emerges in the spring, and can live up to june. This means that it can live as long as 11 months in the adult stage.

This is a male on the flower of the Cabbage Thistle (Cirsium oleraceum). He will probably live for eleven months and die after fertilising the female who may survive him next year to lay her eggs on Rhamnus or Frangula.

This shot was taken against the light and BG of sloe bushes,at a distance of 2 about meters with my camera hand- held.

Hello Ivan,
both - the butterfly and plant - are shown in a nice light. Although I'm specialized on buterflies, I like the plant structures shown here even more. The light is very well managed so that structures are visible in the dark and the bright parts of the picture as well and there is only slight overexposure on a few structures. Very well done!
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ivan
I have rarely seen a better job, if I have. This is a really precious wonderful shot. The sun caught through the beautiful wings of the butterfly and on that pretty thistle, the perfect sharpness and well-achieved background, the wonderful color and clarity... Everything is perfect.
Superb job. Thank you very much for sharing.
Best wishes
Maite

Hi Ivan

What a beautiful butterfly!
It's nice to see picture like this in the middle of winter :)
The colors on this one are charming and the way thelight falls on them is makes them even more beautiful and it gives them a certain glow :)
Also the details are great and the contrast with the BG excellent.

Bravo, TFS and Happy Holidays!

Hi Ivan.
Perfect work with sunlight. Amazing tone effect. Composition of your nice picture is outstanding, I think, as well as the sharpness and details of the flower and butterfly, blurriness and colour tones of the BG. elegant framing of the picture. Great job and TFS.
Alexei.

Hermosa captura. Buena iluminación que hace aún mas atractivo el disparo. Bellos colores, buen POV, DOF y BG.

Hi Ivan

What a wonderful shot, I really like the composition and POV, I am a big fan of backlighting that iluminates the Butterfly showing the Body, very nice details and superb colours too.

Hello Ivan,
What a GREAT shot! I really like this back lightning that makes its wings almost translucid. Details, composition, POV and exposure are just wonderful! This is a lovely shot and I like the plant it's on as much as the insect itself. This is a fantastic capture, congratulations. I also wish you all the best for the New Year. Thanks,
Claudine
