Thymelicus lineola from Fleeting Memories From Summer -06 seen drawing nectar from Achillea millefolium ("Yarrow").

Taxonomy:
Family: Hesperiidae, the only family in the superfamily of Hesperoidea, with 3 subfamilies and 7 genera in the Nordic countries.
1. Hesperiinae, genera: Hesperia, Ochlodes, Thymelicus. Characteristic of all Hesperiinae is their peculiar habit of completely spreading their hindwings straight out while their forewings are spread 40/45 degrees diagonally upwards when resting, which makes it look like the wings are in disarray.
2. Heteropterinae, genera: Carterocephalus, Heteropterus
3. Pyrginae, genera: Erynnis, Pyrgus.
Subfamily: Hesperiinae Grass Skippers, with 3 genera in the Nordic countries:
1. Hesperia,
2. Ochlodes,
3. Thymelicus. The Skippers in this genus are coloured uniformly brownish-yellow and their flight is slower than that of other Hesperioidea.
Genus: Thymelicus, with 2
Species in the Nordic countries:
1. T.lineola "Essex Skipper". The T. lineola differs from its cognate the T. sylvestris in that the undersides of the antennae are black whereas those of the latter are orange.
2. T. sylvestris, the black pheromone line in the male is stronger and longer than in the T. lineola and the greyish-yellow underside of the hindwing has a light brownish-yellow shade against the back edge; prevalent mainly in Denmark, they may occassionally stray to western Sweden.

For names in most European vernaculars, distribution maps, etc., the interested student is recommended to visit Chris Jonko's (Christopher_PL on TN) great site European Butterflies with other excellent links.

Swedish "[Liten] tåtelsmygare" is now obsolete, "Mindre tåtelsmygare" being the established name.

Hello Goran,
a very nicely shown resting pose, and a pretty composition of skipper and flower as well. And a perfect explanatory note on skippers - thank you!
Best regards,
Peter

Hi Goran,
Excellent shot, very nice DoF, well focused, sharp, and very neat blurry BG. Well composed, nicely framed. Very aesthetic image.
