[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
As it is dull and wintery here in Scania, I feel inspired to post something bright and summery.

Last summer, when I was experimenting with my new 420 mm combination , I tried a few 'macro' shots, like this one of a fresh female Large Blue (Maculinea arion).

This fresh-emerged female was, in her virgin state, looking for nectar in the Wild Thyme flowers, rather lay eggs, for it is also the caterpillar's initial source of food.

The eggs are lair singly on a Wild Thyme flower. When the larva emerges it eats a little of the flower, then by secreting a sweet substance and smelling like an ant grub, it gets adopted by a red Myrmica ant. After being carried inside the ants nest the caterpilar attacks and voraciously eats the ant grubs.

The fully developed butterfly emerges from the ant's nest in July the following year.

The large Blue is Rare in Europe, red-listed and protected. I am lucky to have it virtually on my doorstep.

Hi Ivan,
Beautiful butterfly you photographed here. A plus is certainly you captured your Large Blue in the 'wild'.
My nit is the busy background.

Wonderful, Ivan, the light is beautiful on the glittering wings, also the colour-combination is fantastic, thanks

Hello Ivan,
nice to see once again this beautiful Large Blue in its natural environment and presented in its natural colours. The background is a bit noisy which probably can be compensated by post-processing.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Ivan,
Wonderful colors despite the seemingly harsh light. Frontal point of view enables very nice composition. Sharpness and depth of field are excellent. Very well done.
Best wishes,
Hakan

well captured.
thanks

Hello Ivan,
so, that is your doorstep collection! I envy you. The shot is daring from up front, but it succeeded. Sharpness all over, the grazing light enhances the bristles and scales.
If you could ever make a picture of the larva being brought int a nest ...
Thanks for sharing,
My best regards,
Dietrich

To say that female Large Blue is not as pretty as the male would be an understatement, Ivan. You picture here shows its beautiful wings to perfection. That cluster of dark spots on each wing and that lovely design along the edge of the wings are the most attractive features of this female's beauty.
Your frontal point of view does the image full justice.
Best regards,
Ram

Hello Ivan

I really like "blues" so this shot appeals to me.Surprisingly difficult subjects to photograph.Very good texture and detail in the wings. With nicely saturated colours. Some species open their wings so infrequently that these shots are difficult. It's nice to see the lovely blue colour too.TFS
