[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last year we spent a few days on the island of Oland. The end of May and the beginning of June is a good time to see migrating birds.

However, as it was windy and showery most of the time conditions for photography were not good.

Most of the southern part of the island consists of a kind of karst land known as 'Alvaret'. Some of this is exposed reddish limestone, while lager parts are covered by heaths and grazing land. The flora is unique.

Among the nesting birds is the Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria). There are two races in Sweden: the northern race has a black face and more black on the breast while this, the southern race is paler.

This shot was digiscoped through my Zeiss 85 telescope at a distance of about 40 meters.

PP Photoshop 4 treatment consisted of
Size reduction
Sharpening and selective gausian blurring in the BG using the lasso tool.

Hi Ivan,

You keep coming up with birds I have never seen. This is lovely. I love the colors and it is wonderful against the natural background.

Jane

You know what, Ivan?
I had just opened your picture for a full view and was reading your note (I always do that first) before writing my critique.
Then the words "gausian blurring" caught my eye. Though I'm a bit dense in the use of technology, I realized that you had blurred the BG by using this technique which I had seen on the editing softwares I use but had never tried.
So I went for it and have just finished redoing a butterfly picture; I am quite happy with it though it is not an easy tool to handle. Always leaves tell-tale footsteps behind :-).
Coming to your picture, it is a lovely capture with your well-controlled digiscoping technique. The BG you have created suits the image well, making the subject stand out sharply.
Best regards,
Ram

Hello Ivan,
quite busy last couple of weeks and not so much time to be active on TN. But today I have some time and find this nice image of this golden plover. Didn't know the golden plover has to phases. Learned something again.
Good digiscoping!
Regards, Jacob

Hello Ivan , good POV and DOF using but little grainy is a result of sharpening manuplations I think , TFS.

I like the composition a lot.
The monochromatic palette is beautiful.
The picture looks grainy in parts.
But you can still see the lovely markings on this plover.
TFS. : )

Hello Ivan,
Like Ram, I never used this gausian blur function and I think that it is an interesting one to try eventually. I usually do it with neat image but I very curious to try it as it'll not give the same result.

This is a nice capture of this bird that looks like its environment a lot. I like those details, POV, composition and tones of colors. The image seems a little noisy but it is not something that distracts us too much from this very nice picture. Noise can be tricky sometimes. I looked at my yesterday's picture and today I see noise that I didn't see yesterday. It must have appeared during the night ;) Well done and TFS,
Claudine

A charming capture of this sweet little bird. I love the colours (very different from my snowy plover) and the capture in this grassy setting really shows how well it can hide out.
