Great Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopus major

This is the most common Woodpecker in Sweden which can be found throughout the country becoming less common in the very north. It is mainly found in woodlands with old trees where it looks for insects and larvae under the bark and in dead wood. Its drumming can often be heard from a long distance.

The one above is a male. The female lacks the red patch on the back of the head. This shot was taken on one of those rare sunny days from a distance of about 6 metres.

Hi Ulla,
Great composition on this capture, the colors are good, but the whites seem a little overexposed so have lost some detail.
Thanks for sharing.
Rick

Hello Ulla,
We don't have them here; in fact Woodpeckers in Quebec are very different. This is so nice specie. He looks like a cartoon's character :) This is a very good POV and composition with great blue sky as BG. Details are pretty good, I'm sure that they would have been sharper with smaller aperture but sometimes, we don't decide of the lighting conditions we have. Well seen and well done! Thanks,
Claudine

I used S2 for more than 6 months so I know the difficulties with these kind of capricious models.
Nowadays I am also trying to take a Great Spotted photo. If they don't have different behaviors in Sweden, I have to congratulate you.

Hello Ulla,
I know what fatih means: it's not easy to shoot a decent picture of this woodpecker. Nice capture. Maybe with a little pp it can be presented sharper (did you sharpen the image?).
Well done,
JAcob

Hi Ulla,

A wonderful bird in a beautiful day in a specific position! Great contrast between blue
sky and bird colors.
Congratulation, Dan

Hi Ulla,

Pretty woodpecker. I don't think we have this one here but it is hard to get a good shot of the ones we have. They are not people friendly.

I love woodpeckers, Ulla. Have a deep childhood association with them.
I had to walk 5 miles to my school through a thick forest way back in 1950s. We were just a couple of lads from my village attending the school then and whenever that other guy decided to give the school a slip on certain days, I used to be mortally terrified of walking through the forest alone. It was at those times that the assuring 'took-took' of a woodpecker gave me a lot of solace :-)!

The woodpeckers of my childhood days looked like this one, so I admire you picture!
The bird looks beautiful against the sky.
Thanks and sorry for the long tale.

Hi Ulla.
I like perfect composition of your picture and wonderful rich colours. Triangular structure of the shot is very pleasant to eye. Colour palette (black, white, blue) is really beautiful. Only it seems to me some white spots are a bit OE and some details of the feathers are lost. I think that distance to the bird was not so short. However, I like your nice picture so much. My best wishes and TFS.
Alexei.

bonjour ulla

Luis52.

Hi Ulla,
An excellent shot on this Great Spotted Woodpecker. Great quality light and spot on exposure. The colors are superb. Detail is pretty sharp with some falloff due to shallow DOF. He looks great against that blue sky backround.
