Vagrant Darter - Sympetrum vulgatum

There are several species of reddish darters and they are quite hard to identify. It’s not enough to look at the colour of the abdomen. This species has a yellow streak down the legs while the Common Darter, for example, has black legs and a more evenly shaped body.

This species is common in the south of Sweden and is found in open areas near shallow pools of water but they also migrate over large areas and often visit gardens, like this one, who has settled to warm himself on a stone in our garden. You also find them perched on a stick or high point from where they hunt. After they’ve caught their prey they return to the same place and are therefore quite easy to photograph.

In Sweden they fly from July to September and last year even in October.

This was taken from a distance of about 50 cm in the afternoon, when they’re quite lazy and tend to stay put for a while.

You have literally caught the fellow napping, Ulla! Looks sound asleep, going by the relaxed pose of its foreleg :-).
Do I see extra long legs of a spider protruding from underneath the stone, or am I getting paraniod by spending too much time on TN :-)?
A lovely capture of this red Darter having good time in your garden.
TFS and take care.

quelle netteté et gamme de détails, quand on sait combien elle est difficile à approcher. Couleur naturelle.

Hi Ulla,
A truly lovely image!Sadly we don't have these wonderful insects round where I live.It must be very rewarding to catch one so beautifully. The transparency and detail of its wings has been captured so well and the clarity and colour just perfect.Well done!

Hi Ulla.
Very well done shot. I see this species like a stone. I have seen some similar pictures. Sharpness and details (including colours) of the dragonfly is simply perfect. Soft lighting is very impressive too as well as the composition. TFS and best regards.
Alexei.

Hello Ulla,
This is strange; I often see this specie on rocks... They like it as rocks keep the warmth from the sun as you said... This is a very nice capture with natural lightning and exposure. I love the contrast between the red and the grey. In fact, I always loved red and grey together :))) You capture a nice pose from this little beauty. Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Ulla this is a great catch the colours and detail are fine its well composed tfs rgds Necip.
