[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a one centimeter long Mayfly larva, Ecdyonurus venosus, inhabiting clear streams. Since it lives hidden on the underside of rocks there is no way to present the animal in its natural setting. I put it in a glass dish, applied a vacuum to get rid of air bubbles, and used two synchronized flashes , one contre-jour and the other one from above at a 60 degree angle. A Zeiss Tessar lens with distance rings on an old Edixa Reflex B did the job. I had to work the picture to remove dirt and bubbles in the background. Enjoy!

Great Mayfly shot! I love all the detail, especially because I flyfish and tie my own flies too.

Bubble remover is a tough job, I know ;-). Very well done, although a tiny bit overexposed. I mostly use a stereoscopic microscope at low magnification for my marine critters, so I don't have to use a flash.
I particularly like the details of the gills on the abdomen of the larva you've captured.

Great image!

Hello Dietrich!

Excellent picture. Probably best picture of larva of Mayfly I've ever seen. Detailed, sharp, even arty. Great work and very interesting subject. I like this kind of shots - check my theme here:

Hello Dietrich,
I guess this species must be a first on TN.
This is a sharp and well composed presentation. It is interesting to read your method: though the result is vey good the double flash has over-exposed certain aspects, a problem difficult to prevent and solve.
