Apis in flight

Finally caught something in flight – no, not a bird, but I’m working on it ;-). Enjoy!

Apis mellifera - the Western Honeybee

The sub-family Apinae or honeybees, comprises a single genus, Apis, which is characterised by the building of vertical combs of hexagonal cells constructed from the wax secreted by the worker bees.

The genus comprises four species: Apis florea, (the Little Honeybee); Apis dorsata, (the Giant Honeybee); Apis cerana, (the Eastern Honeybee); and Apis mellifera, (the Western Honeybee).

Two characteristics of honeybees which have been essential to their evolution and biology are their natural instinct to cluster and (particularly in the case of the cavity-nesting species), their ability to cool the nest by evaporation of water collected outside. These characteristics enable the colonies to achieve a marked degree of temperature regulation within the nest independant of the external temperature. The genus Apis is thus able to colonize a wide variety of environments, ranging from tropical to cool temperatures.

Very good in-flight, Gabi.
It's not an easy shoot but you manage very well.
It's little soft, I think you can give it a small dose of USM.
Well composed and nice POV.

Hi Gabi, very nice shot. It's worth two points for catching this in flight so well. My only observation would be that the petals of the flower are a little overexposed. The POV is excellent, well done.

Cool shot Gabi, I tried to get some bee shots the other day so I know how tough these fellows are to capture. I might have toned down the brightness on the flower in centre and left, a bit overexposed and distracting. Well done, Rob

Great capture of this little chap on the wing, not an easy one to get - actually, I think it's easier to catch a bird, leastways one of the bigger species that fly "straight" ;-)
Sharpness is good, DOF likewise for your F-8, light was on your side, too, and the bg nicely oof. The leaves - especially on the left side - are pretty bright, so I'd be tempted to tone them down to some extent.
