[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a maggot of Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Dew fly or Fruit fly, Taufliege, Drosophile). This is not a natural setting (Uhhgh) but these larvae would be hidden inside rotten fruit. The 2 mm larva has been cleaned and put on a glass slide. You can see the guts shining through, the yellow Malpighi tubes, some fatbody, the silvery air tubes. Where is the head? (--> it's were the black mouthhooks are!). And on its end you see the two air openings.

A maximal extension of the optics bellow was needed as well as sidewise lighting from fluorescent tubes and from a flash . The old slide had to be scanned, the pic was cropped, smudges removed, sharpened. Enjoy!

Hello Dietrich,
That's a very interesting picture and definitely underestimated (and I don't understand why!). Maybe the sharpness and noise level aren't perfect but still it's a very nice layout with a subject unique to TN. The maggot looks as if it was made of glass.
I like it very much!

Dear Dietrich!
I am really a new one on TN (10 days) so not every single picture was seen by me. Fortunatelly I found this one! It is realy interesting photo from the biological point of view!!! Maybe now a perfect one (I belive that it is possible to sharp it better ;>) but I really like it. Details of fly body are well seen! My congratulation!
