Lesser known backyard inhabitants:

Since I always keep a stack of rotten wood in the yard I experience some nice encounters from time to time. Here it is the 20 mm long female of the Lesser stagbeetle (Coleoptera; Lucanidae; Dorcus parallelopipedus; Balkenschröter). Its larvae burrow inside rotten beech or other leafy wood. The male has big mandibles with which it can engage other males in a wrestling match, stag-beetle like.
It is one of the 6 Lucanidae species that are known for Central Europe.

Hallo Dietrich,

Hi Dietrich, superb detailed macro capture of this interesting and also beautiful coleopteran Lesser stagbeetle. Details of mandibles are astonishing! Perfect composition with superb DOF my friend! TFS. Cheers,

Bayram

Lieber Dieter,
Anne

Hello Dietrich,

You did a nice clean photo of the stagbeetle. The image quality is very good rendering even fine details of the insect. As this is a big insect DOF is immpresing as there are clear details from inscet's back till the wood beneath.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Lieber Dieter,
Peter
