Little known backyard visitors:

Another newcomer in the local fauna is this Asian lady beetle (Coleoptera; Coccinellidae; Harmonia axyridis; Asiatischer Marienkäfer). The beetle larvae are quite voracious and take care of many aphid colonies but also of other aphid predators. They are thought useful in agriculture: specialized enterprises in the US since 1918 and in Europe since 1988 raise the beetles and sell them for release in glasshouses. Not surprisingly some beetles found their way out and established themselves in great numbers in much of the US and Europe. Switzerland thought it did not have the beetle in the wild but maybe nobody was looking carefully. Today many Cantons report their presence and they are thriving in my yard. The larva is easily told from other coccinellid species by the orange coloured tubercles and the many spines on the prothorax. I was'nt looking for them in earlier years.

The picture shows an 11 mm larva on a Geum urbanum plant that is being colonized by aphids (Sternorrhyncha; Aphididae; Macrosiphum gei)

Hallo Dieter!

Nun, es lassen sich nicht nur in Bürchen, sondern auch in Marly schöne und interessante Bilder schiessen. Dieser Marienkäfer scheint einem Festschmaus entgegenzugehen. Herrliche Schärfe und Details, perfekte Beleuchtung, auch wenn es für meinen Geschmack ein zu deutliches Blitzlicht-Bild ist.

Lieber Dieter,
Schönes, klares Bild mit Täter und potenziellen Opfern friedlich (noch) nebeneinander lebend. Der dunkle Hintergrund bringt diese Szene noch besser ins Licht. Mittlerweilen sieht man ja fast nur noch diesen, ein wenig grösseren Marienkäfer hier. Ich hoffe, er hat den anderen nicht das Garaus gemacht.

Hi, Dietrich, again.
I photographed aphids and know that it is so difficult task. You have done it perfectly. Tiniest details of every insect and plant are visible excellently. Pictured scene at whole is amazing. Superb, outstanding work of great Master of Macro Photography. My congratulations.

This is really most impressive - the Asian Lady larva is very nicely in focus as well as those tiny Aphids. Excellent sharp details and fine colours. I like the bud too and the composition is great!
