[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Little known backyard inhabitants:

Two kinds of small (6 mm) beetles sit in this Meadow buttercup: one is the familiar Raspberry beetle (Coleoptera; Byturidae; Byturus tomentosus (F.); Himbeerkäfer) to the left. To the right you see the very similar but much less seen Avens beetle (Byturus ochratius (synonym: B. fumatus; B. aestivus) (L.); Nelkenwurzkäfer), recognizable by its bigger eyes. The beetles pass spring by eating pollen, later they lay their eggs into Raspberry buds resp. Avens buds (Geum urbanum). The white larvae in the ripe raspberries are a familiar sight, fortunately they taste like... raspberries. I add a picture of a bud piercing beetle (see here) in the workshop section.

ID: I used J. Zahradnik,1985. Käfer Mittel- und Nordwesteuropas. Verlag Parey, Hamburg. The family of Byturidae (Flower beetles; Blütenfresser) is represented in my region by 3 species, all looking similar. The diameter of the eye in relation to the distance between the eyes (and the larval host plants) tells them apart. Notice that the beetles occur in two kinds of coloration.

my first critique on TN is for this wonderfull shot. I like the
bright color of the flower and the sharpness of the beetles.
The rain droppleds are a add for this beautyfull composition

Hi Dietrich.
You have reflected these small creatures with your firm quality. I like pictured scene a lot. Flower is an amazing stage for the main characters. Colours of the flower is amazing and details of the insects are stunning. Water drops on the petals are wonderful and decorate the image perfectly. My warm greetings and TFS.

Hallo Dieter,
Ein lustiges Bild. Die Begegnung zweier Doppelstöcker auf "Ankeblueme".
Schöne natürliche Szene, farblich gut abgestimmt. Vielleicht hättest Du das untere Blumenblatt nicht schneiden sollen. Reizend auch die kleinen Glasperlen.
Möchte Dir und den Deinen noch schöne Festtage wünschen. Wir sind nächste Woche im Chalet.

wunderbar präzise Nahaufnahme dieser winzigen, sehr geschäftigen Käferchen in der vom Regen benetzten leuchtenden Butterblumenblüte. Ebenso präzise die fachkundigen Erläuterungen. Auch das Workshop-Foto habe ich sehr genossen.
