Little known backyard inhabitants:

This elegant Red eyed snipe fly (Diptera; Rhagionidae; Chrysophilus erythrophthalmus; Rotaugen-Schnepfenfliege) is tiny, 6 mm long. That doesn't keep it from being a predator on insects even smaller than itself.

ID: The iridescent wings, the blown-up third antennal segment, the golden scales give the genus away. There is a Chrysophilus key on the net (http://home.hccnet.nl/mp.van.veen/KEYS/Rhagionidae/Chrysopilus.html). But there are many similar species around, so maybe I got it wrong.

Hello Dietrich,

You have made an interesting macro of this fly. Head and torax of the insect are shown with great sharpness making visible even the fines details. Colors are well rendered being natural. As you have used well the DOF image has a good depth.
