Lesser known backyard dancers:

The invitation to dance comes today from this 7 mm long Golden vine weevil (Coleoptera; Curculionidae; Otiorhynchus singularis; Brauner Lappenrüssler). The beetles can't fly, are polyphagous, eat on leaves aboveground. Their distribution is restricted to mountains and the foothills, they are lacking in Northern Europe and UK.

ID: I hope to have hit it right, but the genus Otiorhynchus has about 1'000 species! Tell me if you have suggestions. It reminds me of the answer that J.B.S. Haldane (a famous evolutionary biologist, 1892-1964) gave to a lady when she asked for the reason that there were so many coleopteran species. He said: "Ma'am, God had an inordinate fondness for beetles".

Hello Dietrich,

Your macro with this insect is very fine. You have chosen a good dof so that head and torax of the insect are sharply shown. It is very good the way you have rendered the texture and colors of the insect. Also interesting is the way insect's colors blends with the colors of the treebark.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Dietrich!

This time I'm not sure if this bug is lesser known :-) I know it quite well. Good capture of this dancer, with very detailed eye and leg. Is it dancing polka?

Hallo Dieter!

As liebs Grüessli

Markus

curious that the title is similar to what I posted today

Hello Dietrich !
Dance with him ? I think if he was tall enough to dance I would run away screaming if he came close to me ! :-) But the picture is really impressive. Excellent sharpness and details, we can even see the facets on the eyes, but I also like the colors, the composition, the POV. He looks so "real" I gthat he could jump out of my monitor ! :-) Very well done !
Valérie.

Bonjour Dietrich

Lieber Dieter,
Hab herzlichen Dank
Bis bald
Anne

Hello Dietrich,

Thanks,
John
