Better known pond creatures:

Many of you will, like me, be unable to resist when those beautiful Large red damselflies (Odonata; Coenagrionidae; Pyrrhosoma nymphula; Frühe Adonisjungfer) roam again. This year I try to be the first on TN to present it, with a canned shot! :-(

Technical stuff: thanks to my macro flash I could close the diaphragm to f/25. This turned out to be too much, sharpness suffers when all the light must pass the center of the lens. But on the other hand I got some DOF out of it.

Lieber Dieter,
Herrlich farbig Dein Bild!
Anne

Hello Dietrich,

A real beauty, nice pose, good color and detail. Excellent!

I know what you mean about losing sharpness at small f/stops, it's a problem, although your camera, being a 6 megapixel camera, has relatively large pixel sites and doesn't suffer from diffraction softening as much as the newer higher resolution cameras do. My Nikon D70 has essentially the exact same size sensor as your camera, so our experience with diffraction softening is the same. I try not to go smaller than f/16, but sometimes we need more depth of field, and have to trade off a little sharpness to get it.

At smaller image sizes like on this site, it's not very noticeable, but it's easy to see it at higher resolutions.

John
