Lesser known backyard visitors:
with the first warm days of the year a number of insects zoom into my weed garden because of the wild flowers there. This 15 mm size Long-tongued bee (Hymenoptera; Apidae; Anthophora plumipes =A. acervorum; Gemeine Pelzbiene) does it as well. It resembles a bumble bee. In contrast to many bumble bees however it makes no effort to "cheat", i. e. to bite a hole into the spur for easier access to nectar (see picture). The weed in the picture is Corydalis cava.
ID:
Solitary bees are numerous in species, often resembling each other if not studied with a magnifying glass. But in early spring only a small subset of species appears, making ID easier. |
