Macro adventures with a compact camera:

This Alpine stone fly (Plecoptera; Perlidae; Perla grandis Rambur; Grosse Alpen-Steinfliege) is huge, 28 mm long, but very nervous, so the composition of the picture suffered. The critters are an astonishing sight as they appear often in numbers. Their flight appears clumsy and the wing venation pattern is quite close to those of ancestors 300 Ma ago. To conclude from this that the stone flies are "Living fossils" is not warranted however, as some aspects of the biology are highly specialized. The water living larvae ( see here ) have to attach themselves firmly at stones in the violent mountain streams. Despite this they may be carried downstream over large distances during the snow melt period. The adults compensate this movement by flying upstream before laying any eggs.

ID: The orange colored head even between the ocelli separates the species from the equally big P. marginata where the head is black between the ocelli. I used Stresemann et al. 2005. Exkursionsfauna von Deutschland.

Post processing: I removed blemishes with "Stamp" in PS fom the Petasites leaf to make the background less problematic. I darkened the background.

Hello Dietrich,
Despite the diffulties you experienced by its nervousness this is a fine capture of this species of Stonefly. The features are well shown with excellent sharpness an lighting in a pleasing diagonal composition and as the leaf that it is sitting on takes oup most of the imagesurface the BG is a minor problem.
Nice to see the nymph that you refer to.

Impressive macro capture of the Alpine Stone fly! Great details are shown, using nice sharpness and well-chosen POV. Wonderful use of the shallow DOF works very well here. The colors are very natural and the textures on the body of the fly, are very well shown. I like the head and thorax part of the fly. The colors of the fly give great contrast to the green leaf underneath.
