Lesser known backyard creatures:

This is an 8 mm long Stratiomyid (Diptera; Stratiomyidae; Oplodontha viridula; Grüne Waffenfliege). It sits on Valeriana officinalis, growing freely in my yard. You notice the two horns on the scutellum, the hallmark of the whole fly family. Interesting: the abdomen may be green.

ID: Except for the Syrphids, Dipterans are a pain in the neck for ID. Some species stand out however and this is one of them, the only representative of the genus hereabout. The specks in the eye, the metallic reflections of the body, the yellow (or green) abdomen give it away. It's a first on TN.

Technical stuff: I'm not able to portray small insects like this one with a compact camera. A macro flash and manual focusing are needed.

Schönes kontrastreiches Bild dieser kleinen Waffenfliege. Die Bildschärfe ist super, der Bildaufbau auch sehr gelungen. Diese Bild gefällt mir sehr und dazu ist es noch ein First!

Very good macro of this Diptera, also the Flower is very nice colored!

Interesting species of fly, this family is often "overlooked". Good details, light and composition but I think that there are some noises.

Hi Dietrich,

A very interesting little fly and an impressive image, difficult to capture, at best. The use of flash has dropped out all background, which simplifies the composition, very effective in this case. Nice shot!
