Little known backyard bugs:

"I like bugs, they are colorful, funny-smelling and stingy". Well, it's not quite that; this one, the 7 mm long Stictopleurus punctatovenosus (Goeze) (Heteroptera; Rhopalidae; Scentless plant bugs; Glasflügelwanzen) is none of either. It sits on wilted flowers of Origanum vulgare where it is presumably sucking at the seeds. Of course I survey the fresh flowers all the time and take pictures of the bees, dipterans and butterflies that land on them. But dry flowers, that is when bugs have a field day. I posted another picture of the same animal in the workshop section.

ID: The species presented here (for the first time on TN I think) resembles other Rhopalids and particularely the two other species of Stictopleurus here. I used the excellent URL www.britishbugs.org.uk for ID. The differentiation is possible by looking at the shape and coloring of the Pronotum; its posterior point is rounded, not two-pronged and not pointed. The coloration of the abdomen clinches it.

Technical stuff: With my usual hooded double macro flash I got a lot of reflexions on the animal which I had to attenuate somewhat in PS by painting and stamping. Renouncing the use of flash would be difficult with such a small object. But maybe I could disperse the light further with some white paper.

Lieber Dieter,
Bin gerade zurück aus dem Unterwallis und freue mich eine neue Wanze von Dir zu sehen. Sehr interessant wie sie farblich an die Umgebung angepasst ist, natürlich die beste Tarnung, wäre da nicht der Blitz, der die Flügel scheinen lässt. Ich möchte auch noch recht herzlich danken für Deine Angaben zu meinem Ameisenbild. Es brauchte doch Dieter um zu merken, dass es sich hier um eine Hülle von einem Centipede handelt. Habe die Beine gezählt und wirklich so viele bringt auch eine Spinne nicht in ein Bild :-)
