Perla marginata
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is a Perla marginata larva (Great stonefly, Grosse Steinfliege, le Grand plécoptère) which lives in clear streams under the stones. I took it while walking to Pilatus near Luzern. Plecoptera larvae have two cerci, never three like the Ephemeroptera larvae and the tubelike gills are distributed over the body.
The 2 cm animal was taken home and put in a glass dish and two flashes used, one from below and one from above, each at an angle. To get rid of air bubbles I applied a vacuum. The slide (from 1967) was scanned and treated in Photoshop to get rid of background impurities and to sharpen it. |

Hello Dietrich,
You are weakening my resolve to avoid studio shots, but when I think about it, you can't take meaningful photographs of aquatic insect larvae without taking them to the lab.
So you deserve credit for this old, but well treated shot of a stonefly larva.
I must try to take shots of adult stoneflies next summer!
TFS, best wishes, Ivan

Hallo Dietrich,
