[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The picture shows the butterfly
- Parnassius apollo
- family: Papilionidae

English: Apollo
German: Apollo, Apollofalter
French: L'Apollon

It was not easy to take this picture, not because the butterfly was so busy but because the habitat was a rather steep slope. So, I had to take care not to glide off and down.

Species information
The species is easily recognized by its wing pattern. However, there occurs a similar species in the European Alps, Parnassius phoebus, of which I have shown a picture earlier.

A huge number of subspecies have been described of Parnassius apollo, most of them probably without any biological sense.

The plant
The beautiful flower belongs to the genus Centaurea (family: Asteraceae). The species identitity, however, is not clear. In the Alps, there occur 19 different from altogether about 500 Centaurea species.

Location
Switzerland, Wallis (Valais), vicinity of Jungen, steep flower-rich slope, about 2000 m.

Conditions
- very bright sunlight
- ISO 400
- handheld

Lieber Peter,
Anne

Hello Peter,
Ivan and I were just talking about this beautiful butterfly that we hope to look for this summer along the Baltic coast where it's still found in a few places. It is such a lovely butterfly and I love its gliding flight! This is a lovely capture showing the beautiful semi-transparent wings and the lovely red eyes. It looks good on the flower and against the dark background too. Well done!
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hello Peter,

Must be very nice to be able meeting this rare butterfly. You have made good use of this meeting taking a very fine photo. POV is very special and image is sharp. Morover the background looks very well and enhaces the characteristic transparency of buterfly's wings.

Congratulations,
Cristian

Hi Peter!

Truly fantastic capture! One of species from my dreamlist. Perfect POV with well wisible markings on wings, great colours and details. And first of all breathtaking subject. They said it lives in Soutern regions of Poland, but I've never seen it.

Bonjour Peter.
Un trés joli papillon.
Trés belle image.
Mes compliment

Hello Peter,

Fine pov of this low angle shot against the back lighting making the wings so well exposed showing fine markings on the wings. Brilliant sharp details against the well muted background. The flower itself is stunning with light slicing on its fragile petals. Well framed and TFS.

Best regards,
Jusni

Hello Peter,

This is a lovely image you've posted. I love the details, soft lighting with beautiful colors. The composition and POV are wonderful. TFS.

Pearl.

Hi Peter
Apollo always looks great. I have seen this species only one time in Montenegro. Nice blured background (but with little noise), unusual POV and quite good sharpness
Best wishes
Krzysztof
