[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Looking through ma archives I found this picture, which I thought might have some interest for its subject.
This wood-ant was carrying this for him big "thing" which I suppose to be the Chitin-rests of a spider. I wonder what can be used of it and if the ants are eating it.
May be some specialist can answer.

Thanks to Mehmet, Ivan and Dieter for their answers:
It seems that ants really aliment on exuvium .

Thanks especially to Dieter for his scientific precisions:
The ant-species is CAMPONOTUS LIGNIPERDA
and the exuvium it is carrying is not from a spider, but from a Centipede-species. And in fact starting to count the feet there are obviuosly more than 8.

Hi Anne,
Great composition, excellent details, good light and sharpness.
Congratulation!
Alina

Ciao Anne, again neighbour today:), fantastic actioon macro, I like a lot this little ant trasporting a great spider, superb details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

A beautifully managed capture of a natural phenomenon in fine focus and exposure Anne, and yes, the ants can readily devour such chitinuous "exuviums" after transporting them to their nests.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Anne,
A very fine action macro that you kept too long in your archives!
The sharpness of the ant and its burden shows the scene with fine clarity and DOF in a pleasing composition.
I can only guess that as ants eat and feed insects to their larvae their chitinous exoskeleton is included as part of their diet, which means that they can digest chitin. Hence this spider's skin must form a part of their diet.
A fine contribution!
Thanks and my best wishes to you,
Ivan

Hello Anne,
Ants are impressive animals and each time they can surprise you. Like in this photo. It is taken in great sharpness and details. Beautiful clear colours. Nice contrasting BG and DOF.
TFS and regards,

Anne
What great capture!
The strong ant is great, like your capture!

Dear Anne,
This photo intrigues me, because the ant - being alone - pushes the spider bit in an upright position, which would require quite a balancing act.

I notice, you shot the animal at high speed, and still the details in your photo are pronounced, even the lose wood fibers!

The diagonal line of the direction the ant is taking indicates, it still has a long way to go...

I also like the natural colours of your photo i.e. all the work is done by your superior photographic technique.

Kind Regards
Ingrid

Ciao Anne. Good light and contrast in this dynamic macro shot. Good DOf an nice diagonal compo-.

Ciao Anne,
Grazie e complimenti
Buona notte
Con amicizia
Maurizio

Hallo Anne,
also einmal was GANZ anderes!

Saludos: J. Ignasi.

Hello Anne,

They have an amazing power, these little creatures!
And a strong will hehehe...
Interesting situation is documented here, something we have seen so often in real life but not so much in pictures...
Sharp fine details, subjects well framed!

Pablo -
